As an autoimmune central nervous system disease characterized by inflammation and demyelination, neuromyelitis optica (NMO) has been extensively investigated. A specific antigenic target, astrocytic water channel aquaporin-4 (AQP4) has already been identified, and it can be recognized explicitly by the autoantibody marker NMO-IgG. Along with the immune attacks, clinical disabilities would gradually accumulate. As there has been no validated and well-recognized therapy for NMO till now, preventing and postponing attack using immunosuppressive therapies is the primary treatment option.

In the current retrospective study, the effect of immunosuppressive agents was investigated through a long-term follow-up. To assess the long-term effectiveness and safety of rituximab (RTX), azathioprine (AZA), and mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) therapies, all 129 patients with NMO spectrum disorders (NMOSD) who received at least one of these treatments were studied, including 55 seropositive for AQP4-Ab and 74 seronegative fort of 23 patients with RTX treatment, five of 32 with AZA treatment, and three of 21 with MMF treatment. No serious adverse events were observed in all treatment groups during the study.

RTX, AZA, and MMF therapies efficiently lowered the relapse frequency and disability in both of the AQP4-Ab seropositive or seronegative patients with NMO. Furthermore, low dosage of RTX is recommended for the patients with NMO owing to its long-term effectiveness and safety.

We examined the prevalence and nature of accurate and inaccurate genetic risk feedback comprehension among those who received genetic testing for melanocortin-1-receptor (MC1R) gene variants that confer moderate melanoma risk. Participants (N = 145 Albuquerque, NM) were tested as part of a randomized controlled trial. Two weeks after receiving MC1R genetic risk feedback, participants answered open-ended questions regarding their reactions to the MC1R feedback report. Participants' comprehension of their feedback (average-risk or higher-risk for melanoma) was evaluated through qualitative analysis of open-ended responses. Most participants demonstrated comprehension of their feedback results (i.e., 63% of average-risk participants [ARPs]; 51% of higher-risk participants [HRPs]). Miscomprehension was evident in fewer participants (i.e., 16% of ARPs, 11% of HRPs). A few ARPs misunderstood the purpose of testing, whereas a few HRPs reported confusion about the meaning of their risk feedback. Some participants' responses to the open-ended questions were too ambiguous to ascertain comprehension or miscomprehension (i.e., 21% of ARPs, 38% of HRPs). Taken together, these findings suggest that genetic testing feedback for MC1R risk variants is largely comprehensible to general population participants. This study adds to the work examining comprehension and usage of common, moderate risk genetic information in public health contexts. However, to maximize the utility of genetic risk information in the general population, further research is needed to investigate and address areas where common genetic risk feedback misunderstandings occur.The current work aims to investigate the influence of fertilization (fertilizer) and fungal inoculation (Funneliformis mosseae and Serendipita indica (formerly Piriformospora indica), respectively arbuscular mycorrhizal (AMF) and endophytic fungi) on the phytoextraction potential of Arabidopsis halleri (L.) O'Kane & Al-Shehbaz (biomass yield and/or aboveground part Zn and Cd concentrations) over one life plant cycle. The mycorrhizal rates of A. halleri were measured in situ while the fungal inoculation experiments were carried out under controlled conditions. For the first time, it is demonstrated that the fertilizer used on A. halleri increased its biomass not only at the rosette stage but also at the flowering and fruiting stages. Fertilizer reduced the Zn concentration variability between developmental stages and increased the Cd concentration at fruiting stage. A. halleri roots did not show AMF colonization at any stage in our field conditions, neither in the absence nor in the presence of fertilizer, thus suggesting that A. halleri is not naturally mycorrhizal. Induced mycorrhization agreed with this result. However, S. indica has been shown to successfully colonize A. halleri roots under controlled conditions. This study confirms the benefit of using fertilizer to increase the phytoextraction potential of A. halleri. Overall, these results contribute to the future applicability of A. halleri in a phytomanagement strategy by giving information on its cultural itinerary.Many untreated and partly treated wastewater from the home and commercial resources is being discharged into the aquatic environment these days, which contains numerous unknown and complex natural and inorganic compounds. These compounds tend to persist, initiating severe environmental problems, which affect human health. Conventionally, physicochemical treatment methods were adopted to remove such complex organic chemicals, but they suffer from critical limitations. Over time, photocatalysis, an advanced oxidation process, has gained its position for its efficient and fair performance against emerging organic pollutant decontamination. Typically, photocatalysis is a green technology to decompose organics under UV/visible light at ambient conditions. Semiconducting nanometal oxides have emerged as pioneering photocatalysts because of large active surface sites, flexible oxidation states, various morphologies, and easy preparation. The current review presents an overview of emerging organic pollutants and their effects, advanced oxidation processes, photocatalytic mechanism, types of photocatalysts, photocatalyst support materials, and methods for improving photodegradation efficiency on the degradation of complex emerging organic pollutants. In addition, the recent reports of metal-oxide-driven photocatalytic remediation of emerging organic pollutants are presented in brief. This review is anticipated to reach a broader scientific community to understand the first principles of photocatalysis and review the recent advancements in this field.Membrane biofouling in water purification plants is a serious issue of worldwide concern. Various chemical, physical, and biochemical processes are practised for membrane clean-up. A high-dosage treatment adversely affects the life expectancy of the membrane, and minimum dosage seems unable to deteriorate the biofilms on the membrane. It is reported that quorum quenchers like nitric oxide (NO) disrupt biofilm signals through metabolic rewiring, and also NO is known to be secreted by probiotics (good bacteria). In the present review, it is hypothesized that if probiotic biofilms secreting NO are used, other microbes that aggregate on the filtration membrane could be mitigated. The concept of probiotic administration on filtration membrane seeks to be encouraged because probiotic bacteria will not be hazardous, even if released during filtration. The fundamental motive to present probiotics as a resource for sequestering NO may serve as multifunctional bioweapons for membrane remediation, which will virtually guarantee their long-term sustainability and green approach.The Southeastern Anatolia Region (SEAR), the third-lowest mean annual precipitation region in Turkey, has semi-arid climate and plateau characteristics. The proximity of the region to North Africa and the Middle East dust source areas enables long-range transport of desert dust particles toward the SEAR by strong winds. Among the other dust source regions, the Arabian Peninsula has a crucial role in terms of affecting the SEAR with a high-annual frequency and high dust concentration values. We investigated the atmospheric patterns of three extreme Arabian dust episodes that affect the SEAR in this study. Dust episodes were determined using present weather (SYNOP) codes of ten stations in the SEAR during the 2014-2019 period. The source regions were found using HYSPLIT backward trajectory analysis. In this study, we benefited from synoptic maps, in situ PM10 observations, numerical simulations of the WRF-Chem model, and MODIS satellite images to analyze the extreme dust episodes. The results showed that the surface low pressure over the Persian Gulf and strong southerly winds at the 700-hPa level enabled the transport of dust particles from the surface to the mid-atmospheric levels. If the center of the upper-level ridge extended from Saudi Arabia to southern Turkey, the atmospheric blocking mechanism prevented the dispersion of dense dust particles from the SEAR to its surrounding, which caused the observation of high dust concentrations in the SEAR. In general, the WRF-Chem model outputs are in good agreement with ground-based PM10 concentrations and MODIS true-color images in terms of temporal and spatial distributions of dust concentrations.Remote sensing and GIS technology were very helpful to determine an appropriate location of freshwater storage in Amhara, Ethiopia. The techniques were used to investigate the impact of lithology, surface geomorphology, slope parameters, drainage flow, drainage density, lineament density, land cover parameters on relief, and aerial and linear features and to understand their interrelationships. Morphometric parameters such as mean stream length (Lsm), stream length ratio (RL), bifurcation ratio (Rb), mean bifurcation ratio (Rbm), relief ratio (Rh), drainage density (Dd), stream frequency (Fs), drainage texture (Rt), form factor (Rf), circularity ratio (Rc), and elongation ratio (Re) were calculated. Spatial maps of morphometric parameters were produced by using AHP (analytical hierarchy process) of ArcGIS 10.3. Final priority map was generated by the overlay of those parameters with five categories of poor (16.6%), low (41.63%), moderate (29.61%), high (8.88%), and very high (3.28%) storage locations. The map showed that this study area belonged to the low to moderate storage location. The results exhibit precision-based assessment of the suitability for the dam construction sites of 6, 7, and 9 sub-basin zones. The outcome of this study strengthens the knowledge of geospatial analysis for water resources vulnerability and also allows policymakers in this drought-prone area to sustainably manage water supplies.Current statistics report that 2.6 billion households across the globe rely on polluting and inefficient cooking fuels and technologies, posing death-threatening health risks to people mainly from developing countries/regions. Several studies on clean cooking have been conducted with the emergence of international organizations such as the Clean Cooking Alliance to raise awareness. In the current study, a bibliometric tool, CiteSpace, was employed to analyze the 877 documents retrieved from the SCI-EXPANDED, SSCI, and A&HCI databases on clean cooking research from 1990 to 2020. The results reveal that interest in clean cooking research took a sharp rise in the last decade, especially after 2016. The research field has become increasingly interdisciplinary but has mostly centered on environment, energy, and health. The most productive countries/regions in this field are the USA, India, England, and China. The keyword and citation analyses indicate that research in this field mostly focuses on adverse impacts of household air pollution from unclean cooking fuels and technologies on the environment and public health particularly, in developing countries/regions.
