To investigate the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency among children with non-haematological malignancies and to explore possible causes of low vitamin D levels among these patients.
We performed a cross-sectional study of 458 children diagnosed with solid tumours, brain tumours, non-Hodgkin lymphoma or Hodgkin disease at the University Children's Hospital, Uppsala, Sweden. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D and parathyroid hormone levels were measured in samples taken at the time of cancer diagnosis and related to clinical data. Vitamin D deficiency was defined as a 25-hydroxyvitamin D level below 50nmol/L.
The prevalence rate of vitamin D deficiency among children with non-haematological malignancies was 41%. There was no association between sex or diagnosis and vitamin D status. Vitamin D deficiency was more common among school children than preschool children (51% vs. 24%). Older age, season outside summer, and a more recent calendar year were significant predictors of lower 25-hydroxyvitamin D. There was a significant, albeit weak, negative correlation between 25-hydroxyvitamin D and parathyroid hormone.

A random effects meta-regression with robust variance estimates summarized effect sizes for internalizing and externalizing problems across 91 studies (N = 179,315, Mage = 13.98). Results indicated that G1 youth reported significantly more internalizing problems (g = .06), and fewer externalizing problems than G2+ youth (g = -.06). Gender and sample type moderated the effects. For this goal, we studied a sample comprised by 53 dry modern skulls of adult sheep (n = 36) and goat (n = 17) subjects from a modern comparative collection by means of geometric morphometric techniques using a total of 26 anatomical points (2 saggital landmarks and 24 semilandmarks). We studied the link of bone microarchitecture and areal bone mineral density (aBMD) with the risk of major adverse coronary event (MACE) in a cohort of men aged 60 to 87 years followed prospectively for 8 years. At baseline, aBMD was measured using a Hologic Discovery-A device. Bone microarchitecture was assessed at distal radius and tibia by high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (XtremeCT Scanco device). During the study, 53 men had incident MACE. The analyses were adjusted for confounders related to bone and CVD. In 813 men (53 MACEs), higher aBMD at the lumbar spine, hip, whole body, and radius was associated with lower risk of MACE (hazard ratio [HR] = 0.44-0.71/SD, p less then .025 to less then .001). In 745 men having valid distal radius scan (47 MACEs), higher cortical density (Ct.BMD) and higher cortical thickness (Ct.Thd ) were associated with lower risk of MACE. This risk was higher in men in the lowest quintile of cortical measures versus the four upper quintiles combined (Ct.BMD HR = 2.12, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.08-4.17, p less then .025). Findings were similar in 779 men having valid distal tibia scan (48 MACEs). At both sites, higher estimated stiffness and higher failure load were associated with a lower risk of MACE. The risk of MACE was higher in men in the lowest quintile of the measures of bone strength versus four upper quintiles jointly (distal radius stiffness HR = 2.46, 95% CI 1.27-4.74, p less then .01). Similar results were obtained in 638 men without prior fragility fracture and in 689 men without ischemic heart disease at baseline. Thus, in older men followed prospectively for 8 years, higher aBMD, preserved cortical bone status, and higher estimated bone strength were associated with lower risk of MACE after adjustment for relevant confounders. © 2021 American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR).There has been a rapid increase in public, political, and scientific interest regarding the impact of organic ultraviolet (UV) filters to coral reefs. Such filters are found in sunscreens and other consumer products and enter the aquatic environment via direct (i.e., recreational activities, effluents) or indirect (i.e., land runoff) pathways. This review summarizes the current state of the science regarding the concentration of organic UV filters in seawater and sediment near coral reef ecosystems and in coral tissues, toxicological data from early and adult life stages of coral species, and preliminary environmental risk characterizations. Up to 14 different organic UV filters in seawater near coral reefs have been reported across 12 studies, with the majority of concentrations in the nanograms per liter range. Nine papers report toxicological findings from no response to a variety of biological effects occurring in the micrograms per liter to milligrams per liter range, in part given the wide variations in experimental design and coral species and/or life stage used.
