Installing a Wood Burning Stove For a Shed
Wood burning stoves for sheds are an excellent alternative for gardeners looking to add a touch of homeliness to their retreat. Be aware that any DEFRA exempt shed log burner needs to be situated within a smoke control zone and have the flue pipe shielded.
It is also necessary to fit non-combustible surfaces to the walls behind and adjacent to the stove for fire safety reasons.
Size
A wood-burning stove for the shed is a wonderful accessory to any room, not only providing efficient heating, but also providing a rustic and beautiful look that brings warmth and ambience. However, before you decide on a stove for your shed, or another off grid dwelling like a shepherd's hut or yurt, an earthship or container home, you must take into account the regulations and safety rules.
One of the most important aspects to consider when buying a log burner for a log cabin or shed is the size. It is tempting to buy a bigger stove than is required for the space, but this could lead to poor performance and even overheating. To avoid this we recommend using our KW calculator to find out the approximate KW output needed for your kitchen and adding a few KW to ensure.
There are many small log burners that work well for log cabins and sheds. Take the Charnwood Country 4 for example This model features a beautiful country inspired design that would suit any type of shed or log cabin with an output of up to 4.8kW. This model is also Ecodesign capable, which means that it burns efficiently and produces minimal air pollution. It also comes with a huge viewing area as well as a multi-fuel grate, so you can burn wood as well as smokeless fuel.
The Saltfire Peanut stove is another great alternative. It is available in a variety of colors and can generate heat up to 4.7kW. This model does require some extra space to combustibles compared to other models on this list - 550mm to both the sides and rear - this can be reduced by 100mm when shielding is utilized. It also has a large viewing window, making it an ideal option for any shed or log cabin.
To ensure compliance with local regulations, you may have to install non-combustible materials around the stove or flue pipe based on the dimensions and shape of your shed. This is especially important if you have a shed constructed of wood. The wood must be kept at least a distance of 200mm from the stove in order to prevent fires. If your shed is built out of any other material, you should seek the advice of an expert installer to ensure that the correct insulation measures are in place.
Installation
A shed wood burner is a great way to make your garden warm and cozy during the winter months. If you do decide to add one to your shed, you need to make sure that it is installed properly. This will safeguard your shed from fire damage and ensure that the stove is in compliance with safety and building regulations. Also, you must ensure that the shed is adequately ventilated. This includes making sure that the space around the fireplace is free of any combustible material. If there isn't enough ventilation the shed could become hazardous due to the build-up of carbon monoxide.
The first step to install a wood stove in a shed is to determine the size of the space where you'd like to put it. Consider the dimensions of the wood stove as well as any other accessories that might be required. Refer to the manufacturer's guidelines for the safe distance from flammable materials. You'll also need to take into account the insulation levels of the shed, as they could affect the amount of heat generated by the stove.
Once you've taken measurements of the space and marked the area the areas you'll need to create the opening in the wall of the shed. Use a plumb line to get the positions right and ensure that you leave a sufficient clearance between the back of the stove and the wall, as well as between the walls of the shed and the chimney stack. Install a heat shield to protect the wall of the shed from the heat generated by the stove. It is included in the kit and simply aligns with the hearth plate.
It is also necessary to ensure that the shed is equipped with an uncombustible hearth that is typically constructed of either slate or granite, or concrete. The hearth must be a minimum of 12mm thick, and it must be at a minimum of 250mm wide at the front and 150mm on both sides and at the rear. The flue pipe must be protected, and the safe distance from surfaces that are combustible must not exceed 200mm.
Once the stove and hearth are installed, you must wait at least 24 hours before lighting it for the first time. This is to ensure that the sealants and mortar can properly cure.
Ventilation
A wood stove needs oxygen to burn. Without airflow, it could cause a flame that isn't burning or even carbon monoxide. Vents allow air to circulate around the stove while it is operating, preventing carbon dioxide build-up and encouraging air circulation. A vent should be the same size or larger than the chimney/flue and should be placed as close to the stove as it is possible.
There are several regulations that you must adhere to, especially with regards to ventilation when you install a wood-burning stove in an outdoor space. You could be penalized for not complying with. To avoid freestanding wood burning stove fireplacesandstoves , employ a HETAS-registered installer to complete your installation and give you an official certificate of conformance.
The Building Regulation Approved Document Part J, which regulates the installation of chimneys and flues must also be adhered to. This includes the distance the flue pipe can be away from combustible objects, such as walls and ceilings. The stove and the flue need to be protected from fire damage with either heat shielding or an insulation panel.
It is recommended to install an board that is insulated behind and in the front of the outlet for the flue. This will prevent flue gasses from getting drawn through the walls that are not insulated and causing potential fire damage.
You can also protect the shed from dampness if you place it away from potential sources of moisture. This could include windows or doors that leak and any areas that rainwater may splash onto the stove or flue pipe.
A dehumidifier is also able to reduce the amount of moisture in the air, which can create an environment that is more comfortable. It can also help stop fungus and mould from growing on the surfaces in your shed, which can hinder the performance of your stove and lead to damage.
The type of fuel you burn on your log burner will have an effect on its performance too. Don't burn treated off-cuts, ply wood, or particle boards. These kinds of materials release harmful chemicals that can harm the stove and flue system and can cause excessive emissions and potentially dangerously high temperatures in the flue gasses. Never burn rubbish like cardboard or tyres. They're bad for the environment and can block your stove.
Safety
It is possible to install a log stove in a shed. However, it is important to follow the right guidelines for installation and ensure that you are taking all safety precautions. This includes ensuring that your shed meets the requirements for installing log burners and making sure that your chimney and flue system is in good functioning order. Additionally, it's a good idea to ensure that you have the appropriate fire insurance in the correct location.
When looking for a shed to install a wood stove first thing to be aware of is the material used in its construction. Certain sheds, especially ones with a corrugated metal roof, might not be suitable for installation of log burners because of fire safety concerns. It is also important to note that using timber as a building material may be banned for this type of use by the building regulations, so be sure you check with your local authority prior to you start work.
Also, you must ensure that your shed is ventilated. Carbon monoxide can cause health problems because of the inefficiency of the combustion process. A lack of ventilation can cause condensation and damp problems in the shed.
Be certain that your shed is not too close to the stairwell. This can cause heated air to rise, and then lose heat. Your shed should not be too far away from a window as this could cause drafts, which could cause certain stoves such as the open-window detection system to activate.
It's also important to inspect the roof of your shed for watertightness and to make sure that the flue pipe is properly sealed. It is best to employ an expert roofer for the job to ensure the work is completed to a high-standard and in accordance with building and fire regulations. It is recommended to have an extinguisher of class A in the shed to respond quickly to any fire or smoke problems. It is recommended to inspect your shed at least every year to find signs of wear or damage that needs to be repaired, and ensure that the chimney and flue are swept regularly to prevent creosote from accumulating.
