Arterial blood samples were collected prior to, 5 and 30 minutes after puncture of pleura parietalis. In 10 horses, resection of the fifth rib was adequate for exposure of the heart. In one horse, removal of the sixth rib was also necessary. The duration of the surgical procedure (thoracotomy, pericardiotomy) was less then 45 minutes. During a thoracotomy, PaO2 decreased significantly (P less then .05) from 291.8 ± 82.8 mmHg to 165.2 ± 73.5 mmHg but was not different from normal anesthetized controls. The PaCO2 remained within normal limits. This surgical approach provided access to the entire circumference of the heart.Raman spectroscopy is a rapid qualitative and quantitative technique that allows the simultaneous determination of several components, both biomolecules both chemical compounds, in the biological fluids to assess the metabolic status. In this study, the serum composition was evaluated in regularly trained athletic horses using Raman spectroscopy to identify biomarkers of sports performance. Five clinically healthy and regularly trained Italian Saddle horses were subjected to a standardized obstacle course (350 m/minute; eleven 1.25 high jumps) preceded by a warm-up. On the collected sera, at rest, immediately after exercise, 30 minutes, and 1 hour after the end of the exercise Raman measurements were performed using a diode laser with the excitation wavelength of 785 nm. The analysis of the obtained spectra allowed the identification of peaks and bands different in position and intensity among the experimental conditions. The acquired spectra, obtained from horse sera collected during the experimental protocol, were visually similar, except for the large band detected in the 1,250-1,800 cm-1 range. The spectral intensity of the Raman spectrum decreased after training and 30 minutes after the end of exercise respect to the before exercise value, to come to the basal value after 60 minutes the end of the exercise. In conclusion, we can claim the ability of Raman spectroscopy to reveal the metabolic status of horses after physical exercise.Severe asthma is associated with an increased airway smooth muscle (ASM) mass and altered composition of the extracellular matrix (ECM). Studies have indicated that ECM-ASM cell interactions contribute to this remodeling and its limited reversibility with current therapy. Three-dimensional matrices allow the study of complex cellular responses to different stimuli in an almost natural environment. Our goal was to obtain acellular bronchial matrices and then develop a recellularization protocol with ASM cells. We studied equine bronchi as horses spontaneously develop a human asthma-like disease. The bronchi were decellularized using Triton/Sodium Deoxycholate. The obtained scaffolds retained their anatomical and histological properties. Using immunohistochemistry and a semi-quantitative score to compare native bronchi to scaffolds revealed no significant variation for matrixial proteins. DNA quantification and electrophoresis revealed that most DNA was 29.6 ng/mg of tissue ± 5.6, with remaining fragments of less than 100 bp. Primary ASM cells were seeded on the scaffolds. Histological analysis of the recellularizations showed that ASM cells migrated and proliferated primarily in the decellularized smooth muscle matrix, suggesting a chemotactic effect of the scaffolds. This is the first report of primary ASM cells preferentially repopulating the smooth muscle matrix layer in bronchial matrices. This protocol is now being used to study the molecular interactions occurring between the asthmatic ECMs and ASM to identify effectors of asthmatic bronchial remodeling. This review details the current state of knowledge about the equine yolk sac and its remnant (YSR) in the pregnant mare, which, incidentally, is the only animal species known to exhibit large and/or ossified YSR. It also describes the clinical significance of the YSR and details a case of a strangulating YSR that caused fetal death and abortion.Using a half pad beneath a saddle can be beneficial for improving saddle fit. However, there is a paucity of evidence on half pad use when used beneath a correctly fitted saddle. The aim was to quantify the effect that three different half pads have on pressure distribution beneath a saddle fitted following industry guidelines. Twelve nonlame horses were ridden by experienced riders in sitting trot and canter on each rein (three repeats). Saddle fit, with a high-withered cotton saddle cloth (control) compared with three half pads (viscoelastic gel, wool, and medical-grade, closed-cell foam), was evaluated by five qualified saddle fitters. A Pliance (Novel) pressure mat determined saddle pressures. Mean and peak pressures (kPa) beneath the saddle were compared using a general linear mixed model with horse as a random factor and half pad type and rein as fixed factors with a Bonferroni post hoc correction (P ≤ .05). In sitting trot, in the cranial region, peak (P = .008) and mean pressures (P = .03) were highest when using the gel half pad compared with the control. In the caudal region in sitting trot, mean pressures were lowest when using the wool half pad (P = .0002). In canter, increased peak (P = .04) and mean (P = .02) pressures were found in the cranial region of the saddle with the gel half pad. In canter, with the foam half pad, reduced mean pressure (P = .002) in the caudal region was found. It is essential that the use and type of a half pad, to be used beneath a well-fitted saddle, is discussed with a qualified saddle fitter.Obstetric paralysis is a generic term used to describe postpartum locomotor alterations resulting from nerve damage, widely reported in cattle, but rare in equines. The aim of this study is to report a case of a peripheral polyneuropathy in a primiparous mare, 3 years old, of Mangalarga Marchador breed, after a dystocia lasting approximately 12 hours. At the time of delivery, the head of the fetus was exposed in the vulva and there was flexion of the thoracic limbs. These events culminated in a framework of extreme abduction of the pelvic limbs, thus generating functional impotence and leading the animal to adopt a frog anddecubitus position. buy Dexketoprofen trometamol After three days of treatment with no improvement in the clinical framework, the animal was euthanized. In the postmortem examination, perineural hemorrhagic lesions were observed in the obturator and sciatic nerves, characterizing the diagnosis of obstetric paralysis. It is possible the outcome of the case would have been satisfactory if there had been an early fetotomy or postpartum treatment had been more prolonged; however, these measures depend on the availability of equipment, conditions of care, and consideration of the owner.
