While there is evidence that parental exposure to medical radiation is associated with increased risk of sporadic bilateral retinoblastoma in offspring, this association has not been confirmed. Additionally, the relationship between paternal and maternal exposures and sporadic unilateral retinoblastoma has not been fully investigated.
Data were obtained from two large multicenter case-control studies of retinoblastoma. For the paternal analyses, 268 bilateral cases, 155 unilateral cases, and 358 controls were included. For the maternal analyses, 298 bilateral cases, 184 unilateral cases, and 404 controls were included. Logistical regression models were used to estimate odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) to evaluate the associations between parental exposures to medical radiation and sporadic retinoblastoma, while adjusting for potential confounders.
Paternal exposure to medical radiation was not significantly associated with sporadic bilateral retinoblastoma in offspring. However, increags could point to a more complex etiological framework for this important pediatric malignancy.
To estimate the impact on testosterone prescribing over 3 years following the 2015 tightening of Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) criteria.
Analysis of testosterone prescribing data from PBS and private (non-PBS) sources between 2012 and 2018 covering 2015 change in PBS prescribing criteria.
New and total PBS testosterone prescriptions estimating usage by quarter analyzed by product type, patient age-group, indication and prescriber type. Total national testosterone prescriptions (private plus PBS) was verified from an independent data supplier (IQVIA).
PBS usage peaked in 2014 declining by 30% in 2017-8 with PBS prescribing covering a fall from 97.6% by usage in 2014 to 74% in 2017-18 of all testosterone prescribing. The tighter 2015 PBS restrictions sustained the selective reduction in GP initiation of prescriptions for middle-aged men without pathological hypogonadism whereas specialist initiations and prescription for adult hypogonadism or pediatric/prepubertal indications were largely unaffecven indications suggests that long-term androgen dependence is created in men without pathological hypogonadism who commence testosterone. selleck products This highlights the need to avoid prescribing testosterone to men without pathological hypogonadism in the absence of sound evidence of efficacy and safety, the latter including the little unrecognized risks of long-term androgen dependency when trying to quit. The world's second largest expanse of tropical rainforest is in Central Africa, and it harbours enormous species diversity. Population genetic studies have consistently revealed significant structure across Central African rainforest plants. In particular, previous studies have repeatedly demonstrated a north-south genetic discontinuity around the equatorial line, in a continuous expanse of rainforest where a climatic inversion is documented. Here, we took a phylogeographic approach by sequencing 351 nuclear markers in 112 individuals across the distribution of the African rainforest tree species Annickia affinis (Annonaceae). We showed for the first time that the north-south divide is the result of a single, major colonization event across the climatic inversion from an ancestral population located in Gabon. We suggested that differences in ecological niche of populations located on either side of this inversion may have contributed to this phylogenetic discontinuity. We found evidence for inland dispersal, predominantly in northern areas, and variable demographic histories among genetic clusters, indicating that populations responded differently to past climate change. We show how newly developed genomic tools can provide invaluable insights into our understanding of tropical rainforest evolutionary dynamics.
Evidence on the burden of postsurgical complications is mainly from studies in western countries, and little is highlighted in the Asia-Oceania region. This study aimed to identify and compare the burden of postsurgical complications in major cardiac surgeries in Asia-Oceania countries.
A systematic search was performed in PubMed, Embase, and CENTRAL between January 2000 and July 2018. Inclusion criteria were (a) observational studies or randomized control trials; (b) studied in coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) and/or heart valve procedures; (c) measured postsurgical clinical outcomes; and (d) conducted in Asia-Oceania countries. Pooled effects were calculated using a random-effects model.
Of the 6032 articles screened, 472 studies with a total of 614 161 patients met the inclusion criteria. The pooled incidences (95% confidence interval) of hospital mortality and 30-day mortality were similar at 2.38% (2.16%-2.59%) and 2.33% (2.16%-2.50%), respectively. Length of stay (LOS) was 14.07 days (13.44-14.y tend to have poorer survival and higher risk in developing postsurgical complications. The ability to switch magnetic elements by spin-orbit-induced torques has recently attracted much attention for a path toward high-performance, nonvolatile memories with low power consumption. Realizing efficient spin-orbit-based switching requires the harnessing of both new materials and novel physics to obtain high charge-to-spin conversion efficiencies, thus making the choice of spin source crucial. Here, the observation of spin-orbit torque switching in bilayers consisting of a semimetallic film of 1T'-MoTe2 adjacent to permalloy is reported. Deterministic switching is achieved without external magnetic fields at room temperature, and the switching occurs with currents one order of magnitude smaller than those typical in devices using the best-performing heavy metals. The thickness-dependence can be understood if the interfacial spin-orbit contribution is considered in addition to the bulk spin Hall effect. Further threefold reduction in the switching current is demonstrated with resort to dumbbell-shaped magnetic elements. These findings foretell exciting prospects of using MoTe2 for low-power semimetal-material-based spin devices.
