In this Review, we discuss how social and/or ecological influences mediate female choice and how this occurs within the brain. We then discuss our current understanding of the neural substrates underlying female mate choice, with a specific focus on those that also play a role in regulating other social behaviors. Finally, we propose several promising avenues for future research by highlighting novel model systems and new methodological approaches, which together will transform our understanding of the causes and consequences of female mate choice.Hummingbirds, subsisting almost exclusively on nectar sugar, face extreme challenges to blood sugar regulation. The capacity for transmembrane sugar transport is mediated by the activity of facilitative glucose transporters (GLUTs) and their localisation to the plasma membrane (PM). In this study, we determined the relative protein abundance of GLUT1, GLUT2, GLUT3 and GLUT5 via immunoblot using custom-designed antibodies in whole-tissue homogenates and PM fractions of flight muscle, heart and liver of ruby-throated hummingbirds (Archilochus colubris). The GLUTs examined were detected in nearly all tissues tested. Hepatic GLUT1 was minimally present in whole-tissue homogenates and absent win PM fractions. GLUT5 was expressed in flight muscles at levels comparable to those of the liver, consistent with the hypothesised uniquely high fructose uptake and oxidation capacity of hummingbird flight muscles. To assess GLUT regulation, we fed ruby-throated hummingbirds 1 mol l-1 sucrose ad libitum for 24 h followed by either 1 h of fasting or continued feeding until sampling. #link# We measured relative GLUT abundance and concentration of circulating sugars. Blood fructose concentration in fasted hummingbirds declined (∼5 mmol l-1 to ∼0.18 mmol l-1), while fructose-transporting GLUT2 and GLUT5 abundance did not change in PM fractions. Blood glucose concentrations remained elevated in fed and fasted hummingbirds (∼30 mmol l-1), while glucose-transporting GLUT1 and GLUT3 in flight muscle and liver PM fractions, respectively, declined in fasted birds. link2 Our results suggest that glucose uptake capacity is dynamically reduced in response to fasting, allowing for maintenance of elevated blood glucose levels, while fructose uptake capacity remains constitutively elevated promoting depletion of blood total fructose within the first hour of a fast.Effective 'valving' in the upper aerodigestive tract (UAT) is essential to temporarily separate the digestive and respiratory pathways. Marine mammals are largely dedicated to feeding underwater, and in many cases swallowing prey whole. In seals, little work has been done to explore the anatomy and function of the UAT in the context of valving mechanisms that function to separate food and air pathways. Here we use videofluoroscopy, gross dissection, histology and computed tomography (CT) renderings to explore the anatomy of the larynx and soft palate in the harbour seal (Phoca vitulina), and generate models for how valving mechanisms in the head and neck may function during breathing, phonating, diving and swallowing. Harbour seals have an elevated larynx and the epiglottis may rise above the level of the soft palate, particularly in pups when sucking. In addition, the corniculate and arytenoid cartilages with associated muscles form most of the lateral margins of the laryngeal inlet and vestibule, and move independently to facilitate airway closure. The corniculate cartilages flex over the laryngeal inlet beneath the epiglottis to completely close the laryngeal vestibule and inlet. The vocal folds are thick and muscular and the medial margin of the folds contains a small vocal ligament. The soft palate has well-defined levator veli palatini muscles that probably function to elevate the palate and close the pharyngeal isthmus during feeding. Our results support the conclusion that harbour seals have evolved UAT valving mechanisms as adaptations to a marine environment that are not seen in terrestrial carnivores.The decision to express either a defensive response or an escape response to a potential threat is crucial for insects to survive. This study investigated an aminergic mechanism underlying defensive responses to unexpected touch in an ant that has powerful mandibles, the so-called trap-jaw. The mandibles close extremely quickly and are used as a weapon during hunting. Tactile stimulation to the abdomen elicited quick forward movements in a dart escape in 90% of the ants in a colony. Less than 10% of the ants responded with a quick defensive turn towards the source of stimulation. To reveal the neuronal mechanisms underlying this defensive behavior, the effect of brain biogenic amines on the responses to tactile stimuli were investigated. The levels of octopamine (OA), dopamine (DA) and serotonin (5HT) in the brain were significantly elevated in ants that responded with a defensive turn to the unexpected stimulus compared with ants that responded with a dart escape. link3 Oral administration of DA and 5HT demonstrated that both amines contributed to the initiation of a defensive response. Oral administration of l-DOPA weakly affected the initiation of the defensive turn, while 5-hydroxy-l-tryptophan (5HTP) strongly affected the initiation of defensive behavior. Oral administration of ketanserin, a 5HT antagonist, inhibited the initiation of the defensive turn in aggressive workers, abolishing the effects of both 5HT and 5HTP on the initiation of turn responses. These results indicate that 5HTergic control in the nervous system is a key for the initiation of defensive behavior in the trap-jaw ant.Amphibians are unique among extant vertebrates in having middle ear cavities that are internally coupled to each other and to the lungs. In frogs, the lung-to-ear sound transmission pathway can influence the tympanum's inherent directionality, but what role such effects might play in directional hearing remains unclear. In this study of the American green treefrog (Hyla cinerea), we tested the hypothesis that the lung-to-ear sound transmission pathway functions to improve directional hearing, particularly in the context of intraspecific sexual communication. Using laser vibrometry, we measured the tympanum's vibration amplitude in females in response to a frequency modulated sweep presented from 12 sound incidence angles in azimuth. Tympanum directionality was determined across three states of lung inflation (inflated, deflated, reinflated) both for a single tympanum in the form of the vibration amplitude difference (VAD) and for binaural comparisons in the form of the interaural vibration amplitude difference (IVAD). The state of lung inflation had negligible effects (typically less than 0.5 dB) on both VADs and IVADs at frequencies emphasized in the advertisement calls produced by conspecific males (834 and 2730 Hz). Directionality at the peak resonance frequency of the lungs (1558 Hz) was improved by ∼3 dB for a single tympanum when the lungs were inflated versus deflated, but IVADs were not impacted by the state of lung inflation. Based on these results, we reject the hypothesis that the lung-to-ear sound transmission pathway functions to improve directional hearing in frogs.In Arapaima gigas, an obligate air-breather endemic to ion-poor Amazonian waters, a large complex kidney runs through the air-breathing organ (ABO). Previous indirect evidence suggested that the kidney, relative to the small gills, may be exceptionally important in ionoregulation and nitrogen (N) waste excretion, with support of kidney function by direct O2 supply from the airspace. We tested these ideas by continuous urine collection and gill flux measurements in ∼700 g fish. ATPase activities were many-fold greater in kidney than gills. In normoxia, gill Na+ influx and efflux were in balance, with net losses of Cl- and K+ Urine flow rate (UFR, ∼11 ml kg-1 h-1) and urinary ions (40.9 kPa), inhibited gill Na+ influx, UFR and branchial and urinary ammonia excretion. We conclude that the kidney is more important than gills in ionoregulation, and is significant in N excretion. Although not definitive, our results do not indicate direct O2 supply from the ABO for kidney function.Color and spatial vision is critical for recognition and discrimination tasks affecting fitness, including finding food and mates, and recognizing offspring. For example, as a counter defense to avoid the cost of raising the unrelated offspring of obligate interspecific avian brood parasites, many host species routinely view, recognize and remove the foreign egg(s) from their nests. Recent research has shown that host species visually attend to both chromatic and spatial pattern features of eggs; yet how hosts simultaneously integrate these features together when recognizing eggs remains an open question. Here, we tested egg rejection responses of American robins (Turdus migratorius) using a range of 3D-printed model eggs covered with blue and yellow checkered patterns differing in relative square sizes. We predicted that robins would reject a model egg if they could visually resolve the blue and yellow squares as separate features, or accept it if the squares blended together and appeared similar in color to the natural blue-green color of robin eggs as perceived by the avian visual system. As predicted, the probability of robins rejecting a model egg increased with greater sizes of its blue and yellow squares. Our results suggest that chromatic visual acuity and viewing distance have the potential to limit the ability of a bird to recognize a foreign egg in its nest, thus providing a limitation to host egg recognition that obligate interspecific avian brood parasites may exploit.
Coiling is the first-line treatment for the management of unruptured intracranial aneurysms (UIAs), but delayed thromboembolic events (TEEs) can occur after such treatment. ARETA (Analysis of Recanalization after Endovascular Treatment of Intracranial Aneurysm) is a prospective multicenter study conducted to analyze aneurysm recanalization. We analyzed delayed TEEs in the UIA subgroup.

Sixteen neurointerventional departments prospectively enrolled patients treated for ruptured and unruptured aneurysms between December 2013 and May 2015. Participant demographics, aneurysm characteristics, and endovascular techniques were recorded. Elafibranor were analyzed from participants with UIA treated by coiling or balloon-assisted coiling. We assessed the rates, timing, management, clinical outcomes, and risk factors for delayed TEEs using univariable and multivariable analyses.

The rate of delayed TEEs was 2.4% (95% CI 1.0% to 4.6%) in patients with unruptured aneurysms, with all events occurring in the week following the procedure. In multivariate analysis, two factors were associated with delayed TEEs autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) 20.0% in patients with ADPKD vs 1.9% in patients without ADPKD (OR 27.3 (95% CI 3.9 to 190.2), p=0.0008) and post-procedure aneurysm remnant 9.4% in patients with post-procedure aneurysm remnant vs 1.6% in patients with adequate occlusion (OR 9.9 (95% CI 1.0 to 51.3), p=0.006). We describe modalities of management as well as clinical outcomes.

Delayed TEE is a relatively rare complication after coiling of UIAs. In this series, all occurred in the week following the initial procedure. Two factors were associated with delayed TEE ADPKD and aneurysm remnant at procedure completion.
