Aspergillus sp. was predominant in Korean products, and Korean products showed higher enzyme activities than Chinese products. Meanwhile, Bacillus sp. was commonly detected in Chinese shinkiku, and ferulic acid was higher in Chinese products. Principal component analysis based on the GC-MS peak area of the volatiles also clearly distinguished shinkiku products manufactured in China from those in Korea. Chinese products contained higher amounts of benzaldehyde and anethole than Korean ones. Korean products were further separated into two groups one with relatively higher linalool and terpinen-4-ol and another with higher hexanoic acid and 1-octen-3-ol. Thus, our study revealed the commonality and diversity of commercial shinkiku products, in which the commonalities can possibly be the reference standard for quality control of shinkiku, and the diversity suggested the importance of microbial management to stabilize the quality of shinkiku.The present analyses evaluated associations between pasta consumption, nutrient intakes, and diet quality in U.S. children (2-18 years-old; N = 323) and adults (≥19 years-old; N = 400) using the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2001-2012 dataset. An additional aim included assessing associations with pasta consumption and weight-related outcomes in adults. Pasta consumers had increased daily intake of dietary fiber (16 ± 0.6 vs. 13 ± 0.1 g/d, p less then 0.0001; 21 ± 0.8 vs. 16 ± 0.1 g/d, p less then 0.0001), folate, DFE (701 ± 30 vs. 528 ± 5 μg/d, p less then 0.0001; 733 ± 42 vs. 546 ± 4 μg/d, p less then 0.0001), iron (16 ± 0.5 vs. 14 ± 0.1 mg/d, p = 0.01; 18 ± 0.9 vs. 16 ± 0.1 mg/d, p = 0.01), magnesium (249 ± 7 vs. 231 ± mg/d, p = 0.006; 327 ± 12 vs. 297 ± 2 mg/d, p less then 0.02), and vitamio no pasta consumption. Overall, pasta consumption was associated with a better diet quality, improved nutrient intakes and lower intake of nutrients to limit relative to non-pasta consumption in Americans.Background Human milk bioactives may play a role in infant health and development. Although the variability in their concentrations in milk is well-established, the impact of differential milk profiles on infant growth outcomes remains unclear. selleck products Thus, the aim of the present study was to investigate whether different concentrations of metabolic hormones are associated with different weight and BMI in infants beyond the first year of life. Methods Milk samples at 2.6 (±0.4) months after birth and anthropometric measures at 13 months, 2, 3, and 5 years were collected as part of the Finnish STEPS cohort study from 501 mothers and the respective 507 infants. Leptin, adiponectin, insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-1 and cyclic glycine-proline (cGP) in milk were analyzed. Multiple regression models and a repeated measures mixed model were used to examine associations between milk hormone concentrations and weight and BMI z-scores across time, at each time-point, and weight gain from birth to each follow-up visit. All models were corrected for birth weight, infant sex, duration of exclusive and total breastfeeding, time of introduction of solid foods and maternal pre-pregnancy BMI. Results Higher milk IGF-1 was associated with higher weight at 13 months (p = 0.004) but lower weight at 3 (p = 0.011) and 5 years of age (p = 0.049). Higher cGP was associated with lower weight across the 5 years (p = 0.019) but with higher BMI at 5 years (p = 0.021). Leptin and adiponectin did not display associations with infant growth at this time. Sex interactions were also absent. Conclusions Our results suggest that the interplay between human milk-borne IGF-1 and cGP is similar to that reported in other mammals and may have an important role in defining infant growth trajectories beyond the first year of life. Further research should explore the determinants and origins of these milk-borne compounds and evaluate their effect on infant growth and metabolism.5-Demethyltangeretin (5DT) is a unique polymethoxyflavone mainly found in the peel of citrus, and has shown potent suppressive effects on multiple human cancer cells. Biotransformation plays a critical role in the biological activities of dietary bioactive components because their metabolites may exert significant bioactivities. In the present study, the metabolic fate of 5DT in mouse gastrointestinal (GI) tract after long-term oral intake and the anti-cancer effects of its major metabolite were determined. It was found that 5DT underwent extensive biotransformation after oral ingestion in mice. A major demethylated metabolite was produced via phase I metabolism, while conjugates (glucuronide and sulfate) were generated via phase II metabolism. Specifically, 4'-position on the B ring of 5DT was the major site for demethylation reaction, which led to the production of xanthomicrol (XAN) as a major metabolite. More importantly, the level of XAN in the colon was significantly higher than that of 5DT in 5DT-fed mice. Thus, we further determined the suppressive effects of XAN on human colon cancer HCT116 cells. We found that XAN effectively inhibited the proliferation of HCT116 cells by arresting cell cycle and inducing cellular apoptosis, which was further evidenced by upregulated p53 and p21 and downregulated cyclin D and CDK4/6 level. In conclusion, this study identified XAN as a major metabolite of 5DT in mouse GI tract, and demonstrated its suppressive effects on HCT116 colon cancer cells.In an aging population, support for independent living is increasingly critical for older generations. Currently, sarcopenia is a major cause of frailty, which increases the risk of decreased mobility, falls, morbidity, and mortality and leads to dependence on third parties. Sarcopenia is preventable by consumption of adequate protein. However, many older people do not meet the recommended daily allowance of protein, thereby supporting dependence rather than independent living. Current literature indicates that a protein drink could be an appropriate product for older peoples' protein consumption. We were interested in autonomous persons whose nutritional decisions were still self-determined and thus could preventively influence their personal health. This study evaluated three commercially available protein drinks in three focus groups (n = 25) to gain insight into which aspects influence the perception of commercial protein drinks on community-dwelling older people (age, 76.8 ± 4.9). Findings from the focus groups revealed only aspects, which influenced the perception of commercial protein drinks negatively.
