It can be concluded that due attention should be paid to the efficient removal technology and mechanism for polymer-Cr complexes, as well as the oxidation intermediates in the role of conversion and removal of Cr species. The pipe deposits from water distribution network are iron-wastes, which could be used as a catalyst of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). This paper prepared one main composition (α-FeOOH) of pipe deposits and compared the difference of chloramphenicol (CAP) degradation by α-FeOOH-activated hydrogen peroxide/persulfate and α-FeOOH-activated hydrogen peroxide/peroxymonosulfate with hydroxylamine assistance. Several key affecting factors were investigated. The results revealed that the double-oxidant system has a synergy effect in CAP degradation process. This work aimed to quantify the contribution of electrocoagulation(EC) mechanisms on emulsified oil removal from polymer-flooding sewage (PFS), and also to quantitatively compare the performance of EC, anode-electrocoagulation(AEC) and chemical coagulation(CC) on PFS treatment. An apparatus which introduced the salt bridge was proposed to help separate the anode and cathode. To quantify the contribution of coagulation and oxidation individually, the EDTA, a chemical addictive which can inhibit the ability of Al3+ was added to shield the effect of coagulation. The experimental results show that in the PFS treatment by EC method, about 80% of emulsified oil in anode zone was removed by coagulation while only 11%-13% was oxidized; In cathode zone, about 13%-14% of the oil was removed by flotation. Besides, the results suggest that the separation of anode and cathode not only result in the low demulsification efficiency but also generated the fragile flocs. During the comparison and contrast of purification performance of EC, AEC and CC, the effects of treatment time and current densities(aluminum doses) on oil removal was investigated, the pH and absorption spectra evolution over time were also analyzed. The results showed that under all conditions studied, the EC performance outperforms AEC and far beyond CC. Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is highly predominant in India due to excessive use of tobacco. Here we investigated Long INterpersed Element 1 (LINE or L1) retrotransposon activity in OSCC samples in the same population. There are almost 500,000 copies of L1 occupied around 30% of the human genome. Although most of them are inactive, around 150-200 copies are actively jumping in a human genome. L1 encodes two proteins designated as ORF1p and ORF2p and expression of both proteins are critical for the process of retrotransposition. Here we have analyzed L1 ORF1p expression in a small cohort (n = 15) of paired cancer-normal tissues obtained from operated oral cancer patients. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) with the human ORF1 antibody showed the presence of ORF1p in almost 60% cancer samples, and few of them also showed aberrant p53 expression. Investigating L1 promoter methylation status, showed certain trends towards hypomethylation of the L1 promoter in cancer tissues compared to its normal counterpart. Our data raise the possibility that L1ORF1p expression might have some role in the onset and progression of this particular type of cancer. The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) forms an extensive network of membrane contact sites with intra-cellular organelles and the plasma membrane (PM). Interorganelle contacts have vital roles in membrane lipid and ion dynamics. In particular, ER-PM contacts are integral to numerous inter-cellular and intra-cellular signaling pathways including phosphoinositide lipid and calcium signaling, mechanotransduction, metabolic regulation, and cell stress responses. Accordingly, ER-PM contacts serve important signaling functions in excitable cells including neurons and muscle and endocrine cells. This review highlights recent advances in our understanding of the vital roles for ER-PM contacts in phosphoinositide and calcium signaling and how signaling pathways in turn regulate proteins that form and function at ER-PM contacts. Consequently, we need to explore the environment where life and all underlying biological processes occur the molecular level. The progress made in the last few years in relation to meat protein biochemistry enables revisiting the role that sulphur amino acids (SAA) play as redox-active muscle components. Beyond their participation as building blocks in the de novo synthesis of muscle proteins, protein thiols and other sulphur-containing species are active in controlling metabolic pathways, enzymatic processes, and redox reactions. Supplementation of SAA over nutritional requirements has been found to protect muscle lipids and proteins against oxidation, with subsequent benefits in terms of water-holding capacity, colour stability and sensory properties. As strong nucleophilic compounds, protein thiols establish assorted molecular interactions with other meat and non-meat electrophilic species (i.e. phytochemicals). Those interactions have been found to display remarkable effects on the redox properties, functionality and digestibility of meat proteins. The comprehension of these chemistry fundamentals enables a rationale manipulation of SAA via animal nutrition and/or food formulation to guarantee meat quality and safety and furthermore, develop novel, safer and more nutritious muscle foods, with increased oxidative stability. This study evaluated the functional properties of chia mucilage powder (MCP) and gel (MCG) as a phosphate replacers in low-fat Bologna sausages. Four treatments were produced without phosphates (F1-2% MCP; F2-2% MCG; F3-4% MCP; F4-4% MCG) and two with 0.25% phosphate (F5-2% MCG and F6-4% MCG) besides control (20%-fat-0.5% phosphate). Samples containing mucilage were less firm and less chewy on day 0, except F3. Treatments containing 2% MCG were judged acceptable and provided better emulsion stability than those with MCP. Adding 4% MCP or MCG resulted in Bolognas with lower relaxation times and more restricted mobility and lowest sensorial acceptance characterized by the terms light brown and dark pink color (F4). The microscopy images exhibited less cohesive structure in treatments with 4% of MCG, suggesting the formation of a weaker bound protein network. Chia mucilage gel at 2%, due to its functional properties, has proven to be a feasible strategy to substitute 50% phosphate in low-fat Bologna sausages. link2 In this study, physicochemical analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, and kinetic analysis were used to investigate the effects of ultrasonic treatment on waste activated sludge (WAS), with emphasis on its kinetic parameters and pyrolysis behaviors. Thermogravimetric analysis results indicated that the pyrolysis of ultrasonic WAS might be divided into three stages. The main pyrolysis behavior occurred in the second stage (180-540 °C), and its pyrolysis behavior and activation energy were similar to the thermal decomposition of lignocellulosic biomass. Moreover, the physicochemical analysis indicated that ultrasonic treatment reduced the content of lignocellulose and ash, thus changing the pyrolysis characteristics of WAS. Ultrasonic WAS exhibited a higher residual weight (54.93 wt%), a larger average activation energy (140.09 kJ/mol), a lower maximum weight loss rate (-5.71%/min), and a change in the weight loss peak to a higher temperature (304.7 °C), reflecting the decrease of the pyrolysis reaction rate. In addition, the kinetic parameters were calculated using the Starink method and Coats-Redfern method. Most studies show that self-processing in schizophrenia is impaired at the supraliminal level. Schizophrenic patients generally lack the ability to prioritize the processing of self-related information, such as their own face. However, some evidence suggests that schizophrenic patients may retain intact subliminal processing abilities even though their conscious experiences are compromised. We conducted the first study exploring schizophrenic patients' subliminal self-face processing. Using a breaking continuous flash suppression (bCFS) paradigm, we interocularly suppressed face images (self, famous, and unknown faces). Participants' reaction times to detect the faces when they broke the suppression were recorded as an index for the subliminal processing of faces. Unlike the healthy controls, schizophrenic patients did not demonstrate a processing advantage for their own face when it broke interocular suppression; only a face familiarity effect was found. These findings contribute to the understanding of self-processing deficits in schizophrenia. OBJECTIVES Invasive mediastinal staging is advised by guidelines in patients with resectable non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and suspicious lymph nodes (cN1-3) or for central, FDG-non-avid or peripheral tumours >3 cm. Our objective was to assess current guideline adherence and consequent unforeseen N2 disease (uN2) in NSCLC patients having various indications for mediastinal staging. MATERIALS AND METHODS We analysed the Dutch Lung Cancer Audit - Surgery data of all patients who underwent a primary lung resection with lymph node dissection for NSCLC in 2017-2018. Based on the 2015 ESTS-ERS-ESGE guideline we assessed the use of initial endosonography and confirmatory mediastinoscopy as well as uN2 rates. RESULTS A total of 2238 patients were analysed. 43 % (95 %-CI 41-45) underwent initial endosonography followed by a confirmatory mediastinoscopy in 44 % (95 %-CI40-47) of them, resulting in a 19 % (95 %-CI 17-20) rate of properly staged patient according to the guidelines. uN2 was demonstrated in 12.5 % (95 %-CI 9.7-16.0) of correctly staged patients compared to 10.9 % (95 %-CI 9.6-12.4) who were not (p = .36). The highest uN2 rate was found in cN1-3 patients who were not staged (23.0 %, 95 %-CI 16.4-31.2) compared to 13.0 % (95 %-CI 9.7-17.1) who were (p = .01). CONCLUSION Guideline adherence in Dutch NSCLC patients with an indication for invasive mediastinal staging is poor. The highest uN2 rate was found in unstaged cN1-3 patients, suggesting that this subgroup may benefit from an appropriate staging conform guidelines. link3 V.OBJECTIVES Treatment options for malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) are limited but some studies on immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) in MPM have reported antitumor activity. Very little is known about immune-related predictive factors. MATERIALS AND METHODS Here we report the case of a 45-year-old woman presenting with dyspnea and evidence of pleural effusion. She was diagnosed with malignant epithelioid pleural mesothelioma with brain metastasis and peritoneal carcinosis, refractory to initial standard chemotherapy treatment. Because of high PDL1 expression (100 %), she was treated with the anti-PD1 agent, pembrolizumab. RESULTS Chemotherapy with cisplatin and pemetrexed was started, imaging studies showing stable disease after 3 treatment cycles. The patient underwent pleural decortication but rapidly progressed and thus started chemotherapy with carboplatin and gemcitabine. After 2 cycles she experienced seizures caused by a brain metastasis. This secondary lesion was surgically removed and confirmed as a metastasis from mesothelioma.
