Minecraft sales have officially reached 200 million, with 126 million people playing the game monthly. Microsoft is detailing the latest sales figures as Mojang Studios celebrates 11 years since the first Minecraft alpha build was originally released.
Microsoft also noticed an increase in Minecraft usage during this pandemic. Minecraft saw a 25% increase in users and a 40% increase in multiplayer sessions in the last month.
In 2016, sales of Minecraft topped 100,000,000, and the game hasn't slowed down. Minecraft remains the top game on YouTube's numbers of viewers in 2017 thanks to nostalgic playing and a surge in YouTubers' interest.
Microsoft acquired Minecraft maker Mojang about six years ago for $2.5 billion, and at the time, it had sold more than 50 million copies across PC, Xbox 360, PS3, and other platforms. It was a smart acquisition by Microsoft, and the incredible growth in sales and the momentum that has followed ever since has kept players returning to the game for years.
Minecraft started off life as a project for a bedroom which was first released as an Java applet on a website forum. The game was soon accepted by thousands of players who fell in love with its concept that allowed players to create and build structures out of blocks. It has been shared with millions of players through a massive community of gamers who share Minecraft tips and replica objects.
