GlyphosateOur food supply is secure for the future Why farmers use the use of glyphosate for sustainable farming.
It's not surprising that the population of the world is growing. It's no secret that world's population is growing. By 2050, it will reach 9.7 million people.1 But, the amount of land used for farming in the world isn't growing as fast as we are. This presents significant challenges for farmers responsible for providing top-quality food for Canadians as well as other people all over the world.

Canada is the 5th largest exporter.2 Canadian farmers play a crucial role in supplying food to all. They'll have to meet the growing demand as well as manage the spread of diseases and pests as well as weather variations and ensure that their farms are healthy for future generations.

To meet the growing demand, the farmers will need to grow 70 per cent more food by 2050. *Source: Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. How to provide food for the world by 2050

Farmers cannot meet this growing demand all on their own. The positive side is that the latest technology, which includes herbicides like glyphosate as well as other tools, will assist farmers in controlling the weeds with greater efficiency and effectiveness, creating a sustainable and reliable food supply.

What is glyphosate exactly?

グリホサート Glyphosate is a multi-purpose herbicide that is non-selective, and has been used by land managers, farmers and gardeners all over the world for over 40 years. https://auctions.yahoo.co.jp/search/search?rkf=2&p=%E3%83%A9%E3%82%A6%E3%83%B3%E3%83%89%E3%82%A2%E3%83%83%E3%83%97&aucmaxprice=999999999&thumb=1&s1=score2&o1=a&isdd=1&ei=utf-8&fixed=3&nockie=1&isnext=1&ex_cat=2084006160,2084008038,2084034075&rewrite_ok_wand_re_search=1 It acts by blocking an enzyme which plants--in this case, undesirable weeds, require in order to grow. These enzymes aren't present in humans or animals.4 Therefore, when applied properly, glyphosate is not a danger to either.5

There are many other uses for glyphosate, too. It is employed in municipalities to safeguard wildlife and the general public from poisonous weeds.6 Additionally, it is employed to stop burning and ensure the visibility of railway tracks.

More recently there's been an increased amount of focus on glyphosate and its use in our lives. While it's important to question the ingredients that go into our food, it's worth noting that more than 160 of the world's health regulatory bodies which includes Health Canada, agree that glyphosate is safe for human consumption when utilized correctly.8

Canadians will be able to understand what glyphosate is, how it works, and why it is essential for the production of food.

グリホサート Glyphosate is an insecticide which can be utilized in agriculture.

Glyphosate-based herbicides offer a variety of benefits for farmers, customers as well as the natural environment. This is essential for effective weed control, secure food supply, as well as sustainability of the environment. Let's explore each benefit.

Globally, farmers are losing between 30-40% to 40 percent of their crops due to diseases, pests as well as weeds.9 According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (UNFAO) this losses could be doubled when crop protection strategies aren't used. This is a devastating loss especially for farmers who are able to claim that their crops are the basis of their livelihood.

Farmers are able to depend upon tools that they can depend on every year. Applying glyphosate on fields with glyphosate-tolerant crops is a proven method of keeping harmful weeds away from their crop.

Crops against. Weeds: The battle of their lives

The crops of a farmer must compete with up to 30,000 varieties of weeds in search of space, water, nutrients and light.9 Glyphosate can give crops a fighting chance.

Canadians and other consumers around all over the world enjoy the benefits of a wide selection of affordable food

This is leading to a greater risk of food insecurity. Canadians would be paying 55% more in the event that modern agricultural innovations weren't implemented, such as the use of glyphosate.11

The food we love will be harder to come by. Plant science will allow farmers to continue growing our favourite food items for many more years.

Glyphosate can help to manage weeds and maintain affordable produce in the supermarket. Glyphosate is also used to assist farmers to take care of their biggest asset, that which Cherilyn Jolly Nagle from Mossbank, Saskatchewan, says is their land.

Keep the food we love on our table

Farmers can thrive when they use crop protection tools, for example, glyphosate. It protects crops from pests and disease.

42% more grains, including wheat and corn

72% more fruit

83% More Vegetables and Potatoes12

The benefits are obvious. But is it really safe to use glyphosate?

Simply said simply, yes. And, like every other pesticide, it is best to use according the label instructions. The Canadian glyphosate regulation is overseen by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. The agency examines crops for residues of pesticides to ensure that farmers use it in a safe manner. They also have the Pest Management Regulation Agency (PMRA) which offers guidelines, evaluations of submissions to the product and rejects or approvals. They are home to one of the most comprehensive evaluation processes anywhere in the world.

In addition to ensuring that the herbicides that are approved for use are properly used by farmers, the regulatory agencies will also ensure that an appropriate and safe use of glyphosate is maintained by farmers, manufacturers as well as animals, so that there is no risk caused to the environment or other animals.

Precision agriculture and technology has allowed farmers to take greater control over the use of glyphosate. They are also able to pinpoint precisely where and when the glyphosate is used.

Glyphosate residues are not often detected in food items. It can cause damage if it is detected at certain limits. グリホサート CFIA assures farmers that they are using herbicides properly and following the established limits of residue16. It is very rare to detect glyphosate in food at low levels that are well lower than the Canada's Government's limit.17 As it would not pose any danger to animals or humans18

Glyphosate is a component of sustainable practices in agriculture

Farmers utilize herbicides like glyphosate to help with integrated pest and weed control strategy. That is, they use more than just herbicides to control plants. Glyphosate enabled farmers to adopt conservation/no-till methods that provide long-term benefits for soil and air. グリホサート

- Elimination or reduction of plowing/tilling land

- Reduced CO2 emissions

- Capturing carbon from the soil

Improve soil health

- Reducing water flow and limiting erosion13

"No pesticide regulatory body around the globe considers that glyphosate poses the risk of cancer to human beings at present exposure levels." -- Health Canada (January 11, 2019).

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. How to provide for the whole world by 2050

The most important thing is making sure that Canadian farmers have all the technology, tools and assistance they require in order to supply the increasing food needs of the growing population.

Food safety, good agricultural practices and pest management methods will help farmers will continue to safeguard the food we eat. Glyphosate is among the many tools they will use to ensure that Canadians and all people worldwide are able to access affordable and nutritious food.
