I have been working on setting up a Minecraft server for a couple of days now, and I cannot find a way to get my friends outside of my network to connect. I know that I gave them an IP address. I have tried many different solutions and still no luck. Although I can connect to my server from other computers connected via the same router, it only works when it is set to "cracked".

I tried disabling my firewall on both my host computer and my router, using a different computer as the server host, and changing the port. All the solutions I tried sent the same message to my friends: Cannot reach server" when I was able connect. Here is some possibly useful information:

Host computer (It is not the best ...): ) -OS:Windows XP Pro SP2 -Processor Intel Pentium 4 2.4GHz(uni-core). -RAM 448 MB -IP address: 192.168.1.111

Minecraft Server: -Version: 1.0.0 (jar)

Router: -Type: Wired/Wireless -Brand: Cisco -Model: Linksys E2000 -IP Address: 192.168.1.1 -Router Information: Firmware Version: 1.0.01 build 7Apr 15, 2010 Firmware Verification: 5447e765c2287b134ec7028c3b7c9ceb Current Time: Fri, 06 Jan 2012 18:44:02 Internet MAC Address: 98:FC:11:719:CB -Internet Connection: Connection Type: Automatic Configuration - DHCP Internet IP Address: 64.6.115.194 Subnet Mask: 255.255.248.0 Default Gateway: 64.6.112.1 DNS1: 8.8.8.8 DNS2: 8.8.4.4 DNS3: 216.147.229.12 MTU: 1500 DHCP Lease Time: 4 Hour

If there is any other information you need, please tell me.

You need to forward some ports (router settings) and then open incoming port in your firewall (OS settings). Here's where you can start.

- - #3

no luck

That's what I tried. It didn’t work.

What error did you get? Does minecraft have a manual about hosting a server? Does it indicate which port it uses for this purpose? Forward the correct port to your server's LAN IP (assign the server static ip). And at the server make sure no firewall is blocking that port.

- - #5

It says "Cannot access server" on the computer of my friend.

Most ISPs offer dynamic WAN IP. Always check your WAN IP as it may change. They might also need to include the port number, such as 64.6.115.194.12345.

I found the problem(s)

I got it to work...actually...quite a while ago. I forgot to post it.

I gave my friend the address of an external IP, and I used my own internal IP address for computers in my home network. I also set the port forwarding settings on my router and forwarded port 26565 to my internal server IP (ServerIP).

I'm sure many of you said it before, but I didn't understand it enough.

We are very grateful.

Isn't it possible that your external IP address changes all the time? If your external IP address changes, wouldn't that mean you should give it to him every time he wanted to play? And what happens if playing when the IP address changes? Is there something I am missing about dynamic IPs

Your ISP can assign you a range IP addresses. An IP address is assigned to a user when they connect to the internet. The expiry date/time is extended if the user remains connected. When the user disconnects the IP which he previously used will be available to be assigned to another user.

You must enter the host computer's ip adress in the dmz field of the router (Applications & Games > DMZ). Check if it works (list the routing table). If it works you will need to give the computer a static router address (Setup > Advanced Routeting). It's a 192.168.1.100 IP address. I can't read your manual any better, so I can't help you any further. Also, place your friend's routers in the dmzs. You may also need to disable the router firewall. Good luck.

Although I know there are many posters about this, if you want to follow my idea, look in your router's routing table for the ip adress I'm referring too. I believe it is in Setup> Advanced Routing. You can also keep it simple. You can do it all without a router.

Go to whatismyipaddress.com this will show you your external IP used this IP to let anyone over the internet to connect to your server. You need to assign static LAN IP to your mincecraft server (OS settings), forward the ports used by your minecraft server (router settings), you need to open the firewall ports used by minecraft server game (OS settings).

user --> internet --> port:1234 WAN IP, ROUTER-->port1234LAN IP, minecraft server any data that goes through port 1234 (internet facing) will be forwarded to port 1234 of your minecraft server.

Also, please read the previous posts.

Okay, here's how you do it:

-Go to your web search provider using any device connected to your network, and type "what is my IP address". There will be four strings of numbers, each with a different length, separated by dots. (If you don't see it, try another search provider) This is your IP address. This information should be given to your server members. -Next, go to Command Prompt and type "ipconfig". The first string is your internal IP Address. Use this for connecting your "game" computer to the server, as well as any other computers connected directly to your router. This up can change so you'll need to keep checking it. You can also edit the saved server name (only for computers connected directly to the router). Now comes the hard part. Enter your external IP address into your internet browser. Click Enter to open the router setup page. Take a screenshot of the page and post it on this thread. I will guide you from there.

NOTE: If you are still having trouble allowing your friends to connect, just let me know. You can let your friends connect at the moment, but I'm not sure if it will work. It didn’t for me.

I asked you to send me an image of your router settings. Remember, type the external IP address into your browser's address bar, and tell me what you see. If nothing appears, it could be that your router is not compatible with port forwarding. When you get to the page, press [Print Screen] on your keyboard, go into any image editor, paste the screenshot into a new picture, save the picture, and post it on this thread. Simple.

If you don't understand my instructions or can't read the text, send me your Skype or Yahoo username. I can walk you through the process using Skype or Yahoo! Messenger.

Hey, guys. I've been having sort of the same problem lately. I haven't been able to connect to any Minecraft servers for about a month. I had at least ten servers on my list and they all said "Cannot connect to server."

My brother and I made our own server just a few days before this happened. He port-forwarded and everything. I was connected to it for the first few days. After that, I couldn’t connect again, unless he was using his laptop. This may have something to do with the situation, but I thought I'd mention it anyway. I can still connect to it even if I use his laptop and his laptop alone. He cannot also connect with any other servers.

I don't see any reason why we shouldn't be connected.

I know that he had to do some things with the router for port-forwarding, but, like I said, we were able to connect to other servers for a few days after that, and then everything went dead. I would appreciate your assistance in this matter.

To add onto this, we got a new router right around the time that our problems started. I don’t see how this would have helped, but maybe there’s something I can do with this router. Let me know, please.

@Seanic

1. Talk to your internet provider and find out if you have any problems

2: Make sure you have the correct IP address for the servers you tried to connect to. If necessary, include a port number. The port number is not necessary if it is 25565. This is the default Minecraft port. Example: IP Address: 12.3.4.56 Port Number: 25566 IP Address with port: 12.3.4.56.25566

3: If you are still having problems, post your server IP address on the forums so I can see if I have any problems. I will also need to know the time it will be on. So, create a time range and post it. Don't worry. I will only try to get a signal from it. I will not do anything else unless permitted.

Though I am not a professional, I can still be of great help, because I have dealt with setting up a Minecraft server, and most of the problems comming from the laptop that runs it.

I'll try to set up a day that I can turn on the server, but that might not happen for a while.

But I thought I'd let everyone know that I can connect to only one server other than the one we host. It's also the only one that shows as online and can be connected to.

- Apr 22, 2012

Keep in mind, however, that not all public servers can be accessed 24/7. Even servers listed as 24/7 aren’t always available. There are certain factors like server maintanence, power outages, or crashes that affect those. That might be the reason you aren't able to connect to them.

ITS Simple I had the same problem #1 download Simple Port Forwarding #2 you have to Allow something in the Start Page but I don't remember what it was. It was something to do with Java or The Jar. Check youtube #3. If they still have trouble connecting, then give them the Internet Router Password. If they are still having trouble connecting, unlock your Internet Router and give them the Internet Router Password.

I have a question for everyone. I have an Normal server and my friends can connect to it. I created a BukkitServer but I cannot join it. My friends cant, and everythings the same as the Normal Server. Do I need to Port anything else? ?

Your internal IP address might have changed. Go to the server computer, click Start, and click My Network Places. Double-click on the internet connection it's using. The dialog box will open. Click on the Support tab if the server is Windows XP. It should give you the IP address. You should now be able to update the port forwarding settings and forward to the new IP. Note: I am not sure which tab Windows Vista and Windows 7 has the IP address displayed, but I can assure you that it is in that dialog box.

If your browser cannot access your router's settings pages, you can try entering the external IP into the address bar. You cannot access the settings page via a web browser. In this case, compatible software will be required to access the settings. It does not have a settings webpage. If it does not support port forwarding, you will need an alternative method to forward the server ports to the server. Or, you can just buy a router with this feature.

Note: If you are looking for a new router or wireless router, I have a LinksysE2000 wireless/wired router. It supports port forwarding.
