The More RAM You Give It

There are three ways to play multiplayer Minecraft: Java Edition, which is free. - You have three options: join a public Minecraft server, create your own or buy a Minecraft Realm. - If your friends are on the same network, you can set up a LAN Minecraft server for local multiplayer.

Minecraft is a simple and endless game with millions of players. This makes it easy to find friends to play. It's not always easy to play multiplayer with friends.

You can play multiplayer Minecraft with different editions of Minecraft, depending on whether you have the console-friendly Bedrock edition or the more classic Java edition. No matter which edition you choose, you can only play with other players who have the same version.

If that version is Java, there are few different ways to go about playing with your friends.

Hosting a multiplayer Minecraft server shouldn't take more than a few seconds.

Here's what you should know.

Quick tip: To play together, you must all be using the same version Minecraft.

How to play Minecraft with friends

Servers are the basic building block of Minecraft's multiplayer mode. Anyone playing together will need to be on the same server.

There are thousands of Minecraft servers already out there, which you and your friends can join to play together in moments - see the section below on how to join a friend's or a public server for more details. The only downside there is that you'll be sharing these servers with lots of other people you don't know.

If you and your friends want to have a private game, you can create a Minecraft server for free. It is not an easy task. The server creator will need a computer with good internet speed. If this doesn't work for you, there are other options.

Here's the steps you'll need to follow to either join an existing Minecraft: Java Edition server, or create your own multiplayer server.

Join a server

1. Start Minecraft and select Multiplayer.

2. Click Add Server.

3. Enter the address of the host server in the Server Address box and click Done. This could be an URL or an IP address.

4. Wait for the server connection to complete. Once it appears in the list select it and then click Join Server.

Register and join your server

These steps will show you how to set up a Windows 10 server. The steps should be identical, if not entirely the same, for Mac and Linux computers.

1. Launch a web browser of your choice and navigate to minecraft.net/download. Scroll down to click Java Edition Server.

2. Next, find and download Minecraft server software. Put it somewhere you'll find it. The file will contain a.jar extension.

3. Create a new folder on the computer. Give it a name and place the.jar file. This is where you will keep all your server files.

4. Next, you will need to create plain text documents. Right-click in the folder and select New, then Text Document. Name the text file "start.txt".

Quick tip: You can create an.txt document on a Mac by using the TextEdit program. You can use "cat" to access Linux's terminal.

5. Navigate back to the Minecraft server download webpage. Copy the following command text:

java -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -jar minecraft_server.1.18.2.jar nogui

Note that the numbers near the end will differ based on the most current version of Minecraft.

6. Copy the command text string into your start.txt file.

7. Within the string of command text, you'll see the words "minecraft_server.1.18.2.jar." This section of text will need to be renamed "server.jar". This means that the new code line will now read:

8. This that or the other You can also modify the RAM allocation of your server using this line. The more RAM your server has, the faster it can run, and the more stress it puts on your computer.

9. The RAM is determined by two numbers at the beginning of the line of code. These are the RAM amounts in megabytes. By default, it is set to 1024MB RAM, or 1 gigabyte (GB).

Quick tip: RAM is much more expensive than storage space. One gigabyte is equal to 1,024 megabytes. Set the RAM amount in multiples (1,024 megabytes).

1. Launch Minecraft while your server has been up and running. Next, select Multiplayer.

2. Select Add Server in bottom-right corner.

3. Simply enter the number "0" in the Server Address field or the word "localhost" in the "Server Address" box.

Use a local network server

1. One player should launch a new solo game world. The other player should then enter the pause list and select Open to LAN.

2. In the menu that appears, choose the game mode and whether cheats are allowed. Then click Start LAN World.

4. The other player or players in the same network should launch Minecraft. However, rather than jumping into a world, click on the Multiplayer option from main menu.

5. Minecraft will automatically start scanning for games on the shared local network. Click Join Server when the right world appears.

6. If it doesn't find the server, the players should click Direct Connection. Under Server Address, enter the IP Address of the computer hosting your server. A colon (:) is followed by the five-digit port numbers.
