Well being Effects of EMF Radiation
The radiation from RF-EMF can cause DNA damage, tissue heating and even disrupt the blood-brain barrier. These effects are real, and ARPANSA is actively engaged within the EHS communities, medical specialists, and researchers. The agency will continue to study research related to the health impacts of EMF radiation.

RF-EMF damages DNA
Exposed to man-made electromagnetic fields (EMFs) are associated with DNA damage, as well as other health effects. EMFs can alter the intracellular ionic levels that are crucial to maintain the electrochemical balance of cells. It can also disrupt cell homeostasis, resulting in DNA damage. Additionally exposure to EMFs can also trigger the production of free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS).

The exposure to radiation from RF-EMF has been linked with alterations in male germ cell development. This results in the transformation of germ cells into spermatozoa as well functioning maturation as spermatozoa pass through the epididymis. To investigate the effects of RF-EMF on male germ cell development, a specially-built waveguide machine was designed to expose mice that were not restrained to RF-EME at 2.2 W/kg.

In a study that was conducted recently, researchers discovered that exposure to RF-EME causes the oxidative DNA damage of the spermatozoa. Sperm DNA fragmentation increased by 18% following one week of treatment and by 23 percent after 5 weeks. Furthermore, DNA damage in mitochondria was observed by measuring the level of a biomarker, 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine (8-OH-dG).

Although RF-EMF radiation is not yet considered to be a carcinogen. However, several studies have revealed that exposure to RF-EMF radiation can damage DNA integrity in a range of cell lines. In one such study researchers exposed Vero cells to an EMF of 100 Hz for 45 minutes. They measured DNA damage within 48 hours of exposure to determine if the exposure affected the integrity of DNA.

RF-EMF causes tissue heating
While the effects of RF-EMF are generally considered as thermal in nature, a few studies have revealed that non-thermal effects may also be evident. These may be the reason for some of the unresolved issues in the epidemiological study of EMF hypersensitivity. It is therefore important to take into account non-thermal effects when conducting a systematic review.

The non-thermal effects of RF-EMF may occur at the cell membrane. This is a field where research has been extensively investigated. Particularly the electrochemical properties of cell membranes has been studied. It is believed that energy from RF-EMF higher than 1 MHz is transferred to tissue through dielectric and ionic dissipation. Previous theoretical analyses indicated that the energy transferred to the tissue could be as high as 200 kV/m.

The electric properties of tissue are controlled in the form and quantity of water molecules and ions, and other molecules within the body. This determines how absorbent RF EMR is by different tissues. Tissues with higher conductivity tend to absorb more of the field and cause more of an impact. This is why the degree of heat generated by tissue is not constant from outside to inside the body however, it is more prevalent in hot spots. Bone and fatty tissue is less susceptible to RF heating than other tissues because they have a low water content.

The intensity of the field's penetration is determined by the frequency and strength of field. Muscle tissue absorbs more field energies than the other tissue and converts it to heat more effectively. Usually the penetration depth of RF-EMF is measured in millimeters (mm). However, the greater the frequency, the deeper the penetration.

RF-EMF causes blood-brain barrier disruption
Researchers have discovered that RF EMF can disrupt the blood-brain barrier which can alter sleep patterns and neurotransmitter levels. Additionally to this, the effects that EMF on brain activity have been associated with neurodegenerative disorders. For instance, EMF from mobile phones could affect the electroencephalogram's activity and sleep patterns, in addition to the actions of nitric Oxide and xanthin oxidase.

Researchers at the Vienna University have studied the effects of exposure to RF-EMF to brain cells. They also examined what effects ELF EMF on the brain system. While the mechanisms of the cell that play a role are not fully understood but there is a clear relationship between exposure to ELF EMF and myelin depletion. This relationship might account for the electro-hypersensitivity symptoms of electro-hypersensitivity. However, there are proven methods for regenerating myelin within the brain.

Researchers have found that exposure to 900 Mhz EMF caused a rise in the permeability of BBB and increased signs of neuronal damage in rodents. They also observed increased exovasation of neuronal albumin. Further, they found the following: after 30 mins of 900 MHz exposure 99mTcMIBI increased its diffusion in the cortex. But this effect didn't happen with Evans blue-based injections.

However, RF-EMF has no clear mechanism to disrupt the BBB. The evidence suggests that nonthermal EMF exposure increases erythrocyte membrane permeability. emf sensitivity treatment could affect the BBB and increase the efflux of calcium ions. Furthermore, the presence a 99mTc-MIBI radiotracer within the brain is also connected to an increase in the permeability of BBB.
