Minecraft YouTube Videos have been Watched by 47 billion People.

Adults and children alike aren't playing Minecraft in their millions. They're watching YouTube videos that were created using Minecraft and they are racking up billions of views.



The online video company Octoly has published a report seeking to quantify this, claiming that by June 2014, Minecraft videos had been watched 30.8 billion times, with only 183 million views coming from the channel of Mojang, the game's publisher.



This is three times the amount of views for Grand Theft Auto videos. Octoly estimates that Grand Theft Auto was the second most-watched gaming brand on YouTube, with nearly 12 billion views. It was ahead of Call of Duty (10.2 Billion), Angry Birds (6 Billion) and Halo (4.8 Billion).



According to the company, Minecraft videos have been viewed an additional 16 billion times since June, bringing its total to 47.4 billion views. "In June, our Octoly360 system found 81,000 different YouTube creators discussing Minecraft," explained Octoly. "Today there are twice as many creator channels that have Minecraft videos than there were in June." Octoly explained.



Minecraft being so much ahead of other brands will not come as a surprise to anyone who's been following the game or the development of YouTube in the past few years.



In an analysis of the top 100 YouTube channels in September 2014, published by industry website Tubefilter using data from analytics firm OpenSlate, the kid-friendly Minecraft channel Stampy was the third largest channel on the planet with 189.6 million views during the month.



Also popular in September were channels that had a heavy or total Minecraft focus including Vegetta (eighth in the world with 164 million views in September) and The Diamond Minecart (10th with 161.8 million views).).



Mojang has been supporting its YouTube community since the beginning of Minecraft. They have avoided copyright disputes with creators of videos and are non-judgmental towards the content of their videos.



"We have a lot of people who earn their money by making videos about Minecraft. Vu Bui Mojang's chief operating director, told the Guardian that the profits of Minecraft are amazing.



"That does not take anything away from us I'd say it actually can be beneficial to Minecraft having people who are extremely talented and creative doing things. We've basically outsourced YouTube videos to a global community of millions of people and what they come up with is more creative than anything we could make ourselves."



YouTube is a significant part of the reason why Minecraft is such a successful well-loved and popular gaming brand in 2014. It's also a notable reason for Microsoft's decision buy Mojang for $2.5bn this summer.



Microsoft isn't just buying a game that's sold more than 54 million copies across computers, console and mobile It's also buying one of the world's biggest television brands. Despite its huge popularity on the internet, it's not on television in the traditional sense.
