Donald Trump v Hillary Clinton: how the Debate was Revealed in Tweets

Donald Trump v Hillary Clinton The way it played out in tweets by Anna Collinson Newsbeat reporter

27 September 2016

It is thought to be the most watched debate in TV history.

A total of 100 million viewers tuned in to watch Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton meet for the first time.

It was the first of three telecast debates before the November election.

They both have the same goal: to be the next president of the United States and take over from Barack Obama after his eight-year term.

They have very little in common, leading to conflicts over security, economy, and race relations.

Scroll down to read an analysis from Newsbeat's Political Editor - Jonathan Blake.

Polls suggested the candidates were neck and neck, which meant the debate brought the majority of America to a standstill.

Newsbeat reporter Rick Kelsey tweeted: "Complete silence in #nyc bar for #PresidentialDebate."

Donald Trump's main attention was on Hillary Clinton's record as secretary of state, which is the US's version of the British foreign minister.

Trump tweeted "Hillary Clinton has failed everywhere in the world."

Hillary Clinton retaliated and accused her rival of making racist and sexist comments.

He was also criticised on social media for "interrupting".

Examples of Trump "interrupting" Clinton.

The presidential hopefuls also fought each other on a number of personal issues.

Hillary Clinton criticised Donald Trump for failing to release his tax returns.

She told the audience that "paying zero tax does not make you smart." It makes you a tax cheater.

Donald Trump made a comeback but he was focusing on Hillary Clinton's deletion of thousands on thousands of emails.

One person tweeted their favourite part of the debate the moment when Trump said: "I'll release my Tax Returns when she releases her deleted 33,000 emails."

Donald Trump said his strongest attribute was his winning temperament that Trump claimed Hillary Clinton didn't possess.

This is the way Clinton reacted to that.

After initially refusing to shake the hand of the moderator Donald Trump was accused as a "poor loser" at the conclusion of the debate.

The tweet states: "Many people are saying I'm a terrible loser."

Famous supporters of Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton were eager to show their appreciation.

Katy Perry tweeted Hilary to say she had "goosebumps".

Alec Baldwin's brother, Stephen Baldwin, posted several messages in which he praises Donald Trump.

He tweeted: "Mr. President... God is with You!"

The majority of pundits believed Hillary Clinton came out on top, but Donald Trump and his supporters were having none of it.

Trump tweeted: "Wow! Did great in the polls (except @CNN - which I don't watch). Wow Servers Thank you!"

Some people were discouraged However, following the debate.

One Twitter user wrote: "When it becomes clear that you have to vote for Hilary Clinton or Donald Trump."

What is it that you mean by you didn't follow the news?

Analysis by Jonathan Blake, Newsbeat Political editor

"The anticipation before the first of three presidential debates was enough for an evening of fights in Las Vegas.

"Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump went head-to-head for the first time in their campaigns to win the White House. It was electrifying to see.

"Trump began steady" - he announced his plans to reduce taxes, and negotiate better trade agreements with other countries. Clinton was again questioned on her political career and said that using a private email server was a mistake.

"But as the debate went on the pattern began to appear. Trump was often irritated by comments or questions, while his opponent remained calm and waited for his response.

"He got himself in some holes and was unable to answer questions on racism (stop and frisk was his answer to gun crimes) and sexism (did not explain why he said Clinton did not have the 'look of a president).

"There were no killer blows , but polls show that opinion is divided over which candidate won.

"Trump's core supporters won't be able to verify facts or have second thoughts. Clinton's support base is assured.

"These debates are about winning over those who are in the middle - those who aren't sure. They might not be as smarter after last night's discussion.

"Good job, there are two more debates to go."
