Charles Fey invented the slot machine in the 1890's. He probably didn't realize that his invention, the "Liberty Bell" became the most popular form today of gambling in casinos.

The slot evolution however had a lot of difficulties as many in the United States viewed gambling as an issue that was socially unjust. In 1910, the entire legal gambling industry was banned, leaving horse racing as the sole legal form of entertainment in America.

The public's desire for gambling was equal to that of alcohol during prohibition. The machines, along with alcohol were common within "Speak Easy's" throughout America in large numbers, and were controlled by Organized Crime. When prohibition ended, underground casinos continued to operate.

States began to crack down on illegal casinos and began to seize and eliminate gambling equipment, which included slot machines. Mayor LaGuardia, New York City described them as "mechanical pick pockets" and decimated them with an hammer on a stick before dropping them in Long Island Sound. In 1931 Nevada legalized gambling. Slot machines populated the floor in the casinos of the state but were there only to entertain wives and mistresses playing their penny and nickles, while the men did all the heavy gambling at the tables.
