While there are some differences in the versions between the desktop version of Minecraft and the iPad version (which is referred to as Minecraft Pocket Edition), the base game is the same. Multiplayer is definitely available for the desktop version of the game.
It is important to note that your grandson's account will require to have a Minecraft account for the desktop version (I'm not sure what exactly Pocket Edition works, nor is it possible to use the same account for both versions).
He would like to play the same multiplayer minecraft game on the iMAC
According to this forum:
- Minecraft (the Java version) that runs in Windows 10 (or older versions of Windows or on Macs) is not "cross-platform". It only runs on PCs. - Win10 ("Minecraft Windows 10 Beta Edition") is "cross platform". It can be used on Windows 10 smartphones, tablets and PCs. Win10 is also compatible with PE. PE runs on Android and iOS smartphones and tablets.
Consoles (like the Java version) are distinct animals and can only play with them... Xbox (and PS4, and Wii U) can't play with other editions due to different world sizes and other limitations. (in fact Xbox 360's aren't able to play with Xbox Ones). As long as, and until, the (newer) consoles are able to play in infinite worlds they can't play with any other editions.
The multiplayer will be separate of the Pocket Edition. Pocket Edition players will not be able to play with people who play on Macs which makes the multiplayer completely separate.
