Minecraft has been heralded for its focus on creativity, building, and exploration. Players learn about architecture and construction as well as the simple joy of self-expression. The game's open nature has also led to the development of numerous mods that teach young builders about coding, geography and art. Recognizing its potential as an educational tool a free copy of the game is now offered to every secondary school in Northern Ireland.
CultureTECH, an annual event celebrating the creative and technology industries and has received funding from the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure for more than 200 schools to receive download codes. Each licence is for a specific version of the game, called MinecraftEdu which was specifically designed for classroom. While Minecraft is commonly played in schools, this is the first time that the game is being distributed to the entire region. Do you wish you could be a student again?
