What Are Tonic Convulsions?
A tonic convulsion occurs when an epileptic discharge produces a series of involuntary movements of the limbs. These movements are usually unilateral, but can also occur in asymmetrical form.

Emfit NZ These abnormal movements can last for a variety of different lengths of time. In some cases, the movements can persist for hours, or even days. However, in other cases, the movements are only noticeable after the seizure has already occurred.

During a tonic convulsion, the person may be confused, feel physically tired, and act in a strange manner. They may also experience memory loss. The seizures can be caused by several different things, including meningitis, high fever, and other illnesses.

In a tonic convulsion, the muscles contract quickly and forcefully. This can cause choking, swallowing, and other signs of pain. It is important to keep a safe distance from dangerous objects and equipment. If possible, the person should cushion their head, avoid biting, and use handkerchiefs to protect their mouth.

Seizures occur because nerve cells in the brain send an electrical signal to one another. When the signals are too strong, the cells produce abnormalities in the muscles and glands. Sometimes, the brain will also show an overactivity in the entire brain, which can lead to an asymmetry or a generalized convulsion.

In a tonic convulsion, a child is seized by a series of bilateral myoclonus. In addition to losing consciousness, the child may become dizzy and fall.

Convulsions are caused by several factors, such as a lack of oxygen or a brain injury. Those who have a family history of seizures are at higher risk.
