Internet Protocol television (IPTV) is the distribution of TV programming over Internet Protocol (IP) networks. It differs from distribution via conventional satellite, terrestrial, or cable television format. IPTV permits you to stream the source content continuously and is not a substitute for downloading the media. image source is capable of playing the original content, including TV channelsalmost immediately. This is called streaming media.

Although IPTV employs the Internet protocol it is not only restricted to broadcasting television by on the Internet (Internet television). IPTV is found in many subscriber-based telecommunications networks that offer high-speed TV channels to customers via set-top boxes as well as other devices. IPTV is also utilized for media distribution across private and corporate networks. IPTV is a telecommunications industry that is notable for its ongoing normalisation process (e.g., European Telecommunications Standards Institute).

IPTV services may be classified into live television and live media, with or without related interactivity; moving media's time, e.g., catch-up television (replays an episode of a television show that was broadcast a few hours or days back) and start-over television (replays the current TV show starting from the beginning); and VOD, or video on demand (VOD) which involves browsing and viewing items of an online catalogue of media.

Historically, many different definitions of IPTV have appeared, including elementary streams[clarification needed] over IP networks, MPEG transport streams over IP networks and a number of proprietary systems. The most official definition that has been accepted by the International Telecommunication Union focus group on IPTV (ITU-T FG IPTV) is:

IPTV is defined as multimedia services such as television/video/audio/text/graphics/data delivered over IP based networks managed to provide the required level of quality of service and experience, security, interactivity and reliability. [1]

Another definition of IPTV, relating to the telecom industry is that of the Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS) IPTV Exploratory Group in 2005:

IPTV is the assured and safe streaming to users of entertainment and related video services. This can include Live TV, Video On Demand and Interactive TV (iTV). These are services that are available on an access-neutral, packet switched network which uses the IP protocol to transport the audio, video and control signals. Contrary to the video streaming over the Internet, which is accessible to everyone on the Internet and with IPTV deployments, security of the network as well as performance are ensured.
