One moment of academic resilience I exhibited was during a mathematics test in Grade 10. The trigonometry unit was our last test before the final exam. I had considered myself adequately prepared but once the test started it became apparent that I would not pass. It had been my first low grade in high school and it gave me the chance to assess the view I had on my learning.
I had attributed the issue to a lack of communication between my teacher and me, but in reality, learning is dependent on the student as much as the teacher. I took this as an opportunity to take my learning into my own hands and revised the material, utilizing other sources of information like textbooks, the internet, and my peers. I approached my teacher for a retest and I found that the questions were perfectly within my skill range.
I view learning as a cyclical process and situations like these allow me to fill gaps in my learning and adapt to circumstances. I am grateful for the downfall as my foundation in mathematics has improved greatly and I found no issue with the subject in Grade 11.
