Learn To Malding Like Hemingway
few weeks ago they asked I write an article about the work of Hopper as well as the Nighthawks, and I, as an experienced researcher, was able to inform me. Because it is known, or at least is learned from experience, that to comprehend a painting it is necessary to know the history of the painting, the author and, most importantly, the context within the context in which Hopper painted it. Art is definitely an universal thing, that transcends time and space, which makes it accessible even after hundreds of years. The meanings are subject to change as the world and society change, and what previously could be easily seen, maybe years later, is no longer evident. What was not considered before, today could reveal the work to us in a totally different manner.

Re-defining a work over time

It's a little like what I imagine happens when you see the work of Hopper's " Nighthawks", closed at the bar at late at night, with that window, which resembles a fish tank, in the same position as the characters he observed.

I believe that in this painting, Hopper wanted to give space to the viewer, allowing him to observe the silent serene, well-detailed and peaceful scene that we are presented by the night.

The space, designed for an active viewer could be the keystone that allows the work to be changed in the course of time, and to be timeless, immortal and even modern.

The painting, made in 1942, isn't immediately linked to a specific date However, it is believed that its date can be altered depending on the changing viewer, according to the moment at the period in which the work is viewed.

My opinion is that this is the most important aspect of reading, the space dedicated to the reader Hopper was hoping to create.

I'll explain.

In my research for information and news about Hopper's " Nighthawks" I was able observe how many describe the film by highlighting these aspects:

"[...] the solitude, the feeling of being empty in the world that's shimmering patina is beginning to fade. [...] The uniquely commercial character, the false myths take off their masks to reveal the world as a blurred reality, with no valid points of reference in the face of uncertainty and unconscience. "

Night and transformation
I think this interpretation is a little ambiguous which means that it is an interpretation given in the context of society and by the dates that is attributed to the work of the United States between the 40s and 50s during the economic boom that was redefining the social and cultural values in the life of people in a society that was even a little bourgeois, where nightclubs are viewed as places of loneliness or despair.

This is somewhat true and it's not the whole truth.

When I first came across this painting, without having studied it, it brought me happiness and peace with its vibrant contrast and nighttime stillness.

If I'm from the midst of a huge, noisy and bustling city, nighttime is one of the times when I can experience the city more calmly there are fewer people, fewer cars as well as less noise. There are also more space between the streets to appropriate, where to stay , under the city's starless sky. Night has a completely different meaning to me than the people who drank in bars across the United States during the 40s When the sun sets down and the city is transformed into its appearance, and streets become more open and easy.

We must not forget how society has changed over the course of more than half a century of social and cultural changes, in between Pop as well as Rock culture, and between the psychoedelic movement and the 2000s.

As a girl of the 90s, grew up also at night, and by growing up I am referring to every one of the "formative" experiences that the night provided me with. For me , it's common to be out in the evening and walk through the streets, and on weekends, searching for the best party, dancing until the early hours, riding a motorbike or car to locate the last bar open you can grab a croissant or hot pizza and where you can drink the last glass and smoke the last cigarette before dawn was set. Perhaps from the 80s onwards, the night stopped from frightening those who stayed home (let's keep in mind the anti-prohibitionism movement, jazz music and the Cursed Poets who were all great evening owls) and it became the place where many of the prominent personalities of society find the peace and comfort of other nightclubs.

malding , Hopper's painting is reminiscent of a variety of scenes from modern life. It makes me almost happy and, in all likelihood, sympathize with the last three characters, who have a chat while the bartender cleans the bar to close the bar and begin a new. Those nocturnes seek rest in the quiet of the nocturnal company, contemplate their lives, watching them through a glass . They gather as a tribe of the night, accepting everyone and judging no one. It's not a coincidence that in the most ancient primitive civilizations like the Indian one that the hour and a half before dawn is called Brahmamuhurta, or time of Brahma, the best time to dedicate oneself to meditation, prayer, study and introspection. In this time, the energy levels are higher as well as intense but with an ethereal, spiritual focus.

There is no solitude nor absence in the painting of Hopper. I found more among the streets that were gentrified in the night quarters, since even the right-thinking folks started going out at night.

In other words, the oldest and most popular neighborhoods had to be transformed into marketplaces for consumers as well as the spontaneous aggregations of people in the square were required to arrange themselves into lines waiting to be seated; and the music of the drums that played on the other side of the street was silenced by the police sirens. This is what worries me today, that the night is degraded by its sacred , timeless atmosphere, by its being a moment of aggregation for the lone wolves, and is now an additional uncovering tool of the system that demands clarity and respectability even in the most secluded corners in the city.
