The Hidden Mystery Behind Olive Oil
A yearly international symposium about olive oil and health organized by the Yale School of Public Health will be heading to the middle of the world of olive oil the Mediterranean region of Spain - where leading experts will meet this year to discuss the possibilities and effects of what is sometimes referred to as "liquid gold."

The symposium is co-hosted with the University of Jaen, the symposium will run from December 9-12 in Jaen which is a city located in the region of Andalusia located in the middle of Spain's oil-producing belt and an area that is being considered as a UNESCO World Heritage site for an olive grove, known as the Mar de Olivos, or "Sea of Olives." This is the third symposium that has been held since 2018. The previous year's symposium was delayed due to the pandemic.

Organized by Vasilis Vasiliou, Ph.D., the Susan Dwight Bliss Professor of Epidemiology and chair of Yale School of Public Health's Department of Environmental Health Sciences, and Tassos C. Kyriakides, Ph.D., a Yale Center for Analytical Sciences (biostatistics) faculty participant, the symposium will bring participants from business, academia, farmers and regional and national decision makers to explore the untapped opportunities of the Olive tree as well as its fruits, in particular olive oil.

"We're extremely excited to be returning. This year's event will be the biggest yet, with an impressive and challenging program. I am incredibly thrilled to bring together so many people who are as obsessed with olive oil and its benefits as I am." declared Vasiliou. "There's nothing like this event anywhere on the planet."

The symposium of this year will cover diverse topics that are central to olive cultivation and the future of olive oil for both human and planet health. The topics will include:

Recent research has revealed health benefits connected to olive oil.
What is the impact of climate change on olive groves and how the cultivation of olives can positively affect climate.
A successful olive oil marketing strategy along with business strategies.
Every program session will close with a roundtable discussion and an open-ended Q&A. This symposium also offer an olive oil tasting and an educational tour through the olive groves.

The Yale School of Public Health is seeking to launch the Yale Institute for Olive Sciences and Health The institute will focus on studying the scientific aspects and study of the Olive tree as well as its products and their derivatives, as well as ways to further integrate the fruit and its components in the nutrition of individuals. The institute would also focus on planetary health issues, including circular economy models, sustainability and climate change.

Vasiliou, who is from Greece, also an important center for olive oil production as well as a major consumer, stated that a proposal to establish an olive oil institute needs to be completed and reviewed by the this time next year. The institute could serve as a global institution to facilitate and conduct work in all areas pertaining to the olive tree and its products.
