2.1 What is philosophy of technology ?
• The philosophy of technology is a sub-field of philosophy that studies the nature of technology and its social effects.
Originating in ancient Greece, the philosophy of technology is one of the oldest disciplines. It teaches us to reflect on what we take for granted that is the rationality of modernity. The importance of this perspective cannot be overestimated. NEXT SLIDE
2.2 The Relationship Between Technology and Science
I would like to clear up a common misunderstanding:
• Philosophy of technology and philosophy of science complement each other however they’re not closely related to each other.
Science and technology share a similar type of rationality based on empirical observation and knowledge of natural causality, but technology is concerned with usefulness rather than truth. NEXT SLIDE
2.3 The Centrality of Design to Technology
This is the importance of design process in technology. Technology or engineering as a practice is concerned with the creation of manufacturing items. The design process forms the core of the practice of technology. This has important steps and is not as easy as it looks like. Even making a LEGO car needs plenty of designing skills because there is a lot of details like mini-motor, aerodynamic and visuality. NEXT SLIDE
The most important term of design to technology is the blueprint. Blueprint is a plan that shows how someone will design, build, or achieve something. And it contains all the details that must be known such that the final step to the process of manufacturing. NEXT SLIDE
2.4 Methodological Issues: Design as Decision Making
There is always problems when designing something. To do the right and best decisions, we must apply the right methods. Engineering methods for anything can be found. NEXT SLIDE
2.5 Metaphysical Issues
These are the issues. We mustn’t consider them single handedly. We have to compare ‘em to reality and get the most optimal solution.
