- George Bush chooses to use the word “our” multiple times in his assessment.
Evidence
- “Today, our fellow citizens, our way of life, our very freedom came under attack in a series of deliberate and deadly terrorist acts.”
- “..., I implemented our government's emergency response plans. Our military is powerful, and it's prepared. Our emergency teams are working in New York City and Washington D.C. to help with local rescue efforts. Our first priority is to get help to those who have been injured, and to take every precaution to protect our citizens at home and around the world from further attacks.”
Why it’s important
- Many people were terrified of the recent terrorist attacks that had occurred minutes before George Bush’s assessment. This assessment was shown on television to many people around the world, people who were devastated and heartbroken. When Geroge Bush uses the words "our" in his assessment he refers to himself and his audience. This makes the public feel safer knowing George Bush is siding along with them. If he would have used “your” instead of “our” , his audience might feel separated from him and his evaluation.
Choice # 2
- In his assessment, George Bush chooses to tell his audience that he will “hunt”down the terrorists who caused the attacks on New York.
that he will get the terrorists and find them.
Evidence
- “I have directed the full resources of our intelligence and law enforcement communities to find those responsible and to bring them to justice. We will make no distinction between the terrorists who committed these acts and those who harbor them.
- “Terrorist attacks can shake the foundations of our biggest buildings, but they cannot touch the foundation of America.”
Why it’s important
- November 11, 2001 marked fear and sorrow within so many people that witnessed/heard the terrorist attacks. When George Bush vowed to “hunt” down the terrorist, he promised the attacks will be brought to justice. Justice is a symbol for America meaning his intentions brought hope and secureness for many of his audience. His tone shifts to a vengeful tone in order to remind his citizens, allies, enemies and non citizens that America cannot be broken by these actions.
