Owen verbeterde de werk en levensomstandigheden van de arbeiders hij installeerden nieuwe machines en opende winkels voor arbeiders hij bouwde een school en een kleuter school voor hun kinderen. Owen zei dat de karakter van mensen werd gevormd door de omstandigheden en sociale omgeving en dat de mensen niet verantwoordlijk waren voor hun daden. Door een crisis in 1815 kwam het idee in hem op voor een vesteging voor werkeloze. Pas in 1825 slaagde hij er in om een "experimentele gemeenschap" te creëren.
robert owen heeft voor de arbeidwetgeving gestreefd om de werk dagen tot 12 uur te beperken inclusief 1,5 uur maaltijden /lunchen en dat het verboden moest zijn voor kinderen onder 10 jaar te laten werken.
