ويعرف أيضاً، بأنه: خداعٌ للبصر يحدث عند انعكاس ضوء الشمس على الأرض، في درجات الحرارة المرتفعة، مما يؤدي إلى مشاهدة صور حقيقية تشبه الماء،
ومن هنا حصل على مسمى سراب، ويعرف باللغة الإنجليزية باسم (mirage)، والذي حصل عليه من المصطلح الفرنسي ذاته، ومعناه المرآة الزجاجية.
التفسير العلميّ لظاهرة السّراب
عندما تسطع أشعّةُ الشمس في أيام الصيف الحارّة سواءً في الصحراء أم على الطُّرُق المرصوفةِ، تَرتفع درجةُ حرارة الأرض، كما ترتفع درجة حرارة الطبقة الهوائيّة القريبة من سطح الأرض، فتتمدّد وتقل كثافتها، كذلك كثافتها الضوئية ومعامل انكسارها، بالتالي يزداد معامل انكسار الهواء تدريجياً كلّما ارتفعنا إلى أعلى حيث الهواء البارد.
