Welcome back to iCanHasBooks, and today we'll be reviewing a fiction novel that beginning to stand out- The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle. The book is about a girl named Charlotte, who undergoes change, has both victories and losses, and experiences treachery and traitors while on her voyage back home from Liverpool. For those of you who have not yet read or are reading the book, this is a good time to change the channel or pause the video. In the book, the girl is coming home from England by ship, but this is no cruise ship, it's a cargo ship. In the beginning of this book, Charlotte is a courteous girl, but she's also fairly spoiled. Upon heading to and boarding the ship, there's weird signs that indicate that the captain of the ship, Captain Andrew Jaggery, is a cruel man. Noone on the ship wants her onboard, and you'll find out why in just a moment. After boarding the ship, she finds her room, and the overall appearance of this ship, disgusting. Next, she meets the oldest member of the crew, and the only black man onboard named Zachariah. He tells Charlotte why people hate the Captian... Last voyage, a sailor isn't currently present on the ship, tied a knot that the captain loathed. As punishment, the captain beat him and cut off the sailor's arm. Charlotte was terrified. To make matters worse, Zachariah wasn't finished yet. You see, her father was an officer of the company who owned the ship, and the crew was angry at the captain, yet they knew that they could never overthrow him. As soon as they found out that Charlotte was coming aboard, some of the crew saw her as an excellent way to avenge the sailor, but some saw it all as a cruel idea, and warned her before she boaarded. Now, even more petrified, Zachariah finished by giving her a knife to defend herself. She was reluctant, to keep it, but figured it wouldn't hurt, so she stowed it under her mattress. You see, she also had a meeting with Captain Jaggery, who warned her about certain gangly things, and told her to be on the lookout and report anything immediatly. As you can see, the book is at an intense point. It's a tug of war- Charlotte is the flag on the rope, the crew wants her on their side, but Jaggery wants her too. Charlotte begins to make friends with the crew, including Zachariah, but also enjoys her tea and short talks with the captain every now and then. One day, she goes to fetch something for a fellow crew member, and when in the crew quarters, sees the 2 things Captain Jaggery warned her about: she saw a firearm, which she was promised there were none of aboard except for the captain's by the captain himself, but worse yet, she saw a round robin, a circle of signatures that puts noone on top if they are caught doing an evil act. Seeing these, Charlotte knew immediately, what Zachariah had said was true. Now it was up to her- tell the captain or keep it to herself. Eventually she hurries down to the captain, who calls everyone up to deck. Instead of arriving in an orderly fashion, the crew paraded up the ship with guns, swords, and angry yells, but soon enough, they froze, dropped their weapons, and the sailor with 1 arm steps forward. After a short quarrel between the sailor and the captain, Jaggery shoots and kills him. Next, he punishes Zachariah, and makes his first mate whip him 50 times. These are interrupted when Charlotte tackles the first mate, steals the whip, and lashes the captain across the face. Jaggery takes the whip, his face with a welt across it, and heads back to his cabin, enraged. Now, Charlotte begins to turn to the crew for comfort and friendship. After wearing in, proving herself, and becoming friends with those on the crew, she officially joins, but Jaggery is even more reluctant. He's looking for a good time to point out a mistake and punish her. Soon, word of a hurricane is going around. Jaggery is going to point the ship at it, and go through it. It should speed them up, but could be a total disaster. After they're about halfway though it, the first mate turns up dead, with Charlotte's hankerchief in hand, worse yet, her knife too. Jaggery again turns away from this and orders everyone to maintain their post. After successfully passing through the tornado, Jaggery throws Charlotte into the hold. Here, she meets Zachariah, who she thought dead. They discuss what happened, and decided that she must be held responsible, or else Zachariah would likely be held responsible, after all, the captain secretly knows he is alive. After a brief trial, in which Jaggery uses everything against Charlotte and forces only the answers he wants, Charlotte is declared guilty, and is subjet to a hanging the next morning. Back in the hold, Zachariah and Charlotte decide it was Jaggery who did it, and did it to frame her. They decide they will try to steal his guns and overthrow him, and tell the new first mate of their plan, who will spread the word. When it's time, and word is that the captain is distracted, Charlotte sneaks into the captains office, but right in front of her is the captain himself. The new first mate had been his eyes and ears all along, and he knew the whole time. He offers him 3 options: Die by hanging, and he'll make up some believeable excuse for his family; take the guns; or beg for mercy and return to the crew. In a distraught mess, she flees the room, and the captain is pursuing her. After a brief fight, the captain slips and falls under the ship, never to be seen again. Charlotte is declared the new captain of the ship, the first mate is at her mercy, and they come ashore peacefully. In the ship log, both the original first mate who was murdered and the captain fell off during the storm. At home, Charlotte's father is enraged, for she had forgotten to write in her journal. She is sent to and keeps to her room. Soon enough, she snuck out of her window in time for the ships next departure and boards as a member of the crew yet again.
