Sambo adalah seni bela diri modern yang dikembangkan di Uni Soviet. Kata Sambo kadang ditulis dengan huruf besar "SAMBO" dan merupakan akronim dari САМооборона Без Оружия (SAMooborona Bez Oruzhiya), artinya "bela diri tanpa senjata". Sambo didasarkan pada gulat tradisional Armenia, Georgia, Moldova, Uzbekistan, Mongolia, dan Azerbaijan.
Ada empat versi Sambo:
Borba Sambo atau Sambo olahraga, mirip dengan gulat atau Judo
Sambo bela diri, mirip dengan Aikijutsu, jujitsu, atau Aikido
Sambo tempur (bahasa Rusia: Боевое Самбо, Boyevoye Sambo), dikembangkan untuk militer
Sambo khusus, dikembangkan untuk pasukan khusus militer
