This was protested to in the presence of Mr. Jinnah. Bengalis asked for Bengali also to be recognized as a state language of Pakistan. This saw the language movement take shape. It was on 21 February 1952 that the movement culminated to a point where students decided to defy a ban on rallies, and the Police opened fire to disperse the demonstrators. Many were killed – they are to this day honored as the language martyrs and the 21st of February is commemorated as the language martyrs day. The resistance took the shape of a War of Liberation, with the Provisional Government being formed in April 1971.
