Bu spor, Çin savunma sanatlarının genel adıdır.
Çin dışında genelde Kung-Fu olarak tanımlanan spor türleri de buna dâhildir.
3000 yıldan fazla bir tarihi vardır.
Bugüne kadar yüzlerce Wushu stili geliştirilmiştir.
Kelime anlamı olarak savaş sanatları olarak bilinir.
Wushu, Çin’de Kung-Fu adı ile gelişen
tüm sistemleri bir çatı altına toplamıştır.
Eski Çin’de Kung-Fu adı ile bilinen tüm çıplak
el ve silahlı dövüş teknikleri, zaman ilerledikçe
yüzlerce stil ve sisteme ayrıldı.
Geçmişten bu yana, Çin’li yetkililer bu yüzlerce
Kung-Fu stilini bir araya toplamak için çalışmalar
yapmakta ancak stil önderlerinin birbirleriyle
anlaşamaması sonucu bu hayal gerçekleşememektedir.
Zamanla bu görüş kabul görmeye başlamıştır.
Ülkenin birçok ustası Wushu adı altında
genel bir birlik oluşturmaya başlamışlardır.
Buna karşı çıkan ustalar da kendi geleneksel sistemlerini
ısrarla sürdürmeye devam etmişlerdir.
Bir süre sonra Wushu
daha çok halkın üst seviye yaşayan kesiminde
itibar görmeye başlamış, üst düzey askerler,
iş adamları, sanatçılar ve aristokratlar
arasında çalışılmaya başlanmıştır.
Bunun karşısında da alt tabaka halk
çiftçi, esnaf ve öğrenciler geleneksel Kung-Fu stillerini
çalışmaya devam etmişlerdir.
