Poseidon is the father of the Cyclops called Polyphemus. Odysseus and his crew stopped off at the Cyclopes island on their way home from war. When Polyphemus began eating Odysseus' men, Odysseus blinded him. He couldn't resist boasting of this, and calling out his name to the Cyclops. Polyphemus then asked his father, the sea god Poseidon, to curse Odysseus. Poseidon is angry that Odysseus hurt his son, so he is making sure the Cyclops' curse comes true. He sends storms against Odysseus and tries to wreck him. Later, when Odysseus is wrecked, he tosses his about at sea. When Odysseus is travelling on a raft to Phaeacia, Poseidon sends another storm, washing Odysseus up on shore. When the Phaeacians take Odysseus home safely, Poseidon shows his anger by turning the ship to stone. Poseidon knows he cannot kill Odysseus, as fate forbids it, but he is determined to make him suffer as much as possible before he gets home
