Margaret Sanger meets Gregory Pincus and asks him to develop a contraceptive that was:Cheap, convenient, effective, and edible. The millionaire Katharine McCormick alongside Planned Parenthood helped pay for it. Pincus and the scientist M. C. Chang tested progesterone, a hormone that stops ovulation, on animals from the Worcester Foundation. By Jan. 1952 they saw that progesterone had few side effects, and were ready to test on women. They tested progesterone in Massachusetts, where 80% of subjects didn't ovulate. Later, they tested in Puerto Rico, where women had large familes and birth control was legal. They used progestin, a synthetic version. They added synthetic estrogen to lessen side effects. To sell it in states where contraceptives were illegal, they marketed it as medication for period problems. Two years after they went to the FDA for approval as a birth control pill.
