The first disadvantage of fast food is it’s health concern. Fast food are generally fatty food made with excessive oil and additives such as salt and sugar, meaning a large amount of calorie is present. When customers consumed too much fast food they might become obese and develop diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, strokes, and heart related symptoms due to high cholesterol from excessive fat. (Bose D, N.D) Customers may also consume excessive fast food because it is cheap to buy in large quantity. Also, research has been done proving it is more likely for people living near fast food branches to become obese. (Brown J, 2009)
The second disadvantage of fast food is the taste. Fast food may be cheap, however the taste is also not as pleasant as homemade kitchen food. Home cooked food will taste generally better due to the controlled amount of additive added is controlled. However, fast food can taste rather differently as the tastes are normally leaned to either too sweet or too savoury. This is due to the excessive flavouring such as salt, pepper, sugar, oil and also many other artificial flavourings in the process of making fastfood. (Wolverson M. N, 2009) Excessive artificial flavouring can also lead to many health problems as the customer is not consuming the additives with moderations. (Brown J, 2009)
The third disadvantage of fast food is the decreased amount of socializing. As fast food is cheaper for individual customers, most people would prefer eating alone rather than with others. (Bose D, N.D) This eventually lead to families losing much gathering time and thinning the bonds between family members. Additionally, many children from present time prefer eating in fast food branches with friends of their age rather than with their parents, this could also decrease the amount of time where the whole family actually gather. (Brown J, 2009)
Finally, the last disadvantage for fast food is the quality. As most workers in fast food branches are not professional chefs, the quality of food being made in a fast food restaurant is not at high standard. (Wolverson M. N, 2009) Also, since fast food are generally prepared in minimal speed for each customers, it will not undergo maximal preparation and can sometimes look unsatisfying.
The first advantage of fast food is time saving. As some busy customers arrive home from after work or study, they would not want to wait for a large amount of time to get their hands on some food. (Clark S, 2010) Fast food restaurants are located nearly everywhere, providing customers with simple meals without the need to spend time travelling far distances just to purchase food. (Stein N, 2011) This also means the customer does not have to spend a large amount of time inside and outside the kitchen gathering ingredients and trying preparing for a single meal, meaning time required for kitchen cleaning is also not required. Additionally, fast food are always prepared at fast speed, meaning the customer does not need to wait for a long time just for their order. (Wolverson M. N, 2009, November)
The second advantage of fast food is the low prices. (Bose D, N.D) Fast food restaurants can provide customers with simple large meal sets with minimal cost. Additionally, buying fast food will also reduce the amount of travelling fee. Since buying ingredients from supermarkets in order to make food in the kitchen will make the customer pay for gas and parking fee, buying from fast food branch will be a lot cheaper with these additional cost. It is also cheaper to buy combos at fast food branches than to buy a set meal from normal restaurants. However, this can easily lead to customers eating excessive fast food. (Brown J, 2009)
The third advantage of fast food is the amount of choices a customer have over his food. Fast food provide food of different taste and culture, allowing customers to choose the type of food they would like to eat. (Wolverson M. N. 2009) Fast food provide consumers a wide range of food to choose from, for example burgers, pizza, tacos and many others. Fast food branches also provide balanced diet of both meat and vegetable. (Clark S. 2010)
In conclusion, the disadvantages of fast food outweighs the advantages of fast food. Fast food may be convenient, cheap and have a wider variation, however these advantages can easily contradict themselves as they can encourage the customers to overeat, leading to various health problems. Also the quality and taste of fast food may not reach the customer’s standard as they can easily be criticized. Overall, it is much healthier to eat from food made in the customer’
