DIVINATION

Cartomancy is the art of reading cards to gain insight into future events. There are special kinds of cards designed especially for this purpose, known as a tarot cards, but standard playing cards can also be used.

Forms of cartomancy appeared soon after playing cards were first introduced into Europe in the 14th century. Practitioners of cartomancy are generally known as cartomancers, card readers, or simply readers.

Cartomancy is one of the oldest of the more common forms of fortune-telling. In English-speaking countries the most common form of cartomancy is generally tarot card reading. Tarot cards are almost exclusively used for this purpose in these places.

Cartomancy using standard playing cards was the most popular form of providing fortune-telling card readings in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. In English-speaking countries Tarot cards are more commonly used, however a standard deck of Anglo-American bridge/poker playing cards (i.e., 52-card, four-suit set) can also be used; the deck is often augmented with jokers, and even with the blank card found in many packaged decks. In France, the 32-card piquet playing-card deck is most typically used in cartomancy readings, although the 52 card deck can also be used.

Card Spreads

Cartomancy is done using various layouts or spreads. By using various spreads, one can give a detailed reading. Each of the cards has a meaning, and when you lay them out in a certain way the interpretations deepen.

Single Cards = "Quick Answers."
3 Card Spread = "Past, Present, Future"
9 Card Spread, 3 Rows = "Past, Present, and Future Layers."
21 Card Spread (3 Rows of 7 Cards) = "Gypsy Spider Web."

Card meanings
Playing cards, according to Sybill Trelawney:

Two of spades — "conflict"
Seven of spades — "an ill omen"
Ten of spades — "violence"
Knave of spades — "a dark young man, possibly troubled, one who dislikes the questioner"
Tarot cards, according to Sybill Trelawney:

The lightning-struck tower — "calamity" and "disaster"

The Meanings

The truth is there is a myriad of spreads and thousands of possible readings. These nuances require a good interpreter of the basic meanings of each card, as well as an understanding of what they mean together in certain locations.
