Notes

I was born on 24 th. of December 1927 in Roseberry St in the Gorbals district of Glasgow.
We moved to Rutherglen while I was guite Young. I attended Fairy Street Primary School and
Then to Rutherglen Academy
I left school at 15 and worked as an apprentice fitter with the then London Midland and Scottish Railway before I was called up on the 14.th January 1947 to my National Service in the Royal Navy. I served in Chatham, Portsmouth and Plymouth and various ports both home and abroad.
My time was taken up mainly in sporting activities. I played Rugby for Unitied Services in Portsmouth and eventually for the Roual Navy against the Army at Twickenham.I played football for Nore Command while at Chatham and Hockey For Southern Command at Plymouth.
I was de-mobbed I 1949 and joined the City of Glasgow Police on the 14. th of February 1950, serving in the old Southern division.
I was playing golf on the Kings Park Course with my older brother, Andrew, when we were invited
to play through by the two young ladies in front of us. To cut a long story short I met,courted
and married one of them, Ruth Jackson,on the 11. th. of August 1951. We were together for 65 years. Andrew came along in July 1953, Archie in November 1956 and finally Gail in September
1963. We had four grandchildren,Alastair,Ross,Cameron and,the light of my life, Lorna.we also,now have twin great grandchildren, Alexander and Isla.
I retired from the Police in September1977 and joined Teachers Whiskey as head of security.
I soon realised that I was a policeman again and after a few months I resigned and joined the
Government Service as a driving examiner in 1978.I was eventually promoted as Senior Driving
Examiner to Ayr Driving Test Centre where I was responsible for the whole of South West
Scotland.
During all this time we had moved house on a, more or less regular basis, 14 times, living in Ruthergen, Croftfoot, Kings Park,Newton Mearns,Fairtie,Largs,Wemyss Bay, Helensburgh
Dumbarton to name a few...
At 8.30 pm on the 23 rd of December 2013, the love of my life, Ruth had a stroke and
Was immobile until she passed away at 1.30 am on the 3. rd December 2015.
We had been together for more than 65 years .
My life as I had know ended then.
I had my memories.. The holidays we had with the kids,the caravans, abroad with the
Burnetts(America three times).watching Cameron play rugby, Lorna play golf, all the
births and deaths.
Do not weep for me but remember all the good times we had... Forget the bad, we had a few!!!
