The short story originated in ancient short forms of narrative, such as fables and stories told in the oral tradition. In the United States, short stories became popular in the nineteenth century. Unlike longer pieces of fiction, a short story typically has fewer characters and a tight plot that drives the story.
The novella is longer than the short story but shorter than the novel.
Novels are typically longer and more complex than novellas or short stories. A novel generally has more than 50,000 words, and there is really no limit on its length.
published in 1843 by edar allan poes The tell-tale heart is about a murder and how he almost got away with it.the story starts off by him telling (i guess in prison) you that he not mad because he went through all these steps not to get caught but later on in the story he told the cops that he murder the guy

exposition the introdutchion of main caracters, setting, and intial conflicts
The exposition is followed by the rising action. The rising action includes the series of events that build the plot toward its climax, or peak point of interest.
The climax is the high point of a story, the point when the conflict reaches its peak. The climax is the defining moment in a story and marks a turning point in terms of the action.
The falling action follows the climax. It is at this point that the characters see the results of their actions, and the events of the story begin to wrap up.
The last part of the Plot is typically the Denouement, or the Resolution. The Denouement is the outcome of a story, or how the plot ties together.
Point of View: The narrator provides the point of view to a story. The point of view could be first person (protagonist or observer), second person, or third person (omniscient or limited omniscient).
Theme: The theme is the central idea that a work of fiction explores. The writer intertwines the theme of a work into its plot.
Style: Writing style is the distinctive way in which a writer uses language through diction, sentence structure, and figurative language.
Symbolism: A symbol is something that represents something else. Often, a symbol is something concrete that stands for something abstract.
Tone: A fictional work's tone comes from how a writer conveys his or her attitude toward the subject through the characters, setting, style, and other elements.
Mood: Mood describes the feeling that a work of fiction creates for its readers. The tone of writing shapes the mood of the fictional work and, in turn, the mood of the reader.
Suspense: Writers use suspense to create a mood of uncertainty in their stories. Suspense makes readers want to find out what happens next.
Flashback: A flashback is an interruption in a story in which the action moves from the present to an event in the past.
Foreshadowing: Foreshadowing is when an author suggests (or sometimes shows) what will likely happen later in the story.
Simile: A simile makes a direct comparison between unlikely objects by using the word like or as.
Personification: A writer who gives human characteristics to inanimate objects and animals is using personification. This literary device elicits emotional responses from readers for nonhuman objects.
