We are 9th graders from Sun Prairie Wisconsin, in our biology class we are trying to spread the word about Chikungunya. We think this virus is very serious, and we want to inform students in the African and Indian school system to prevent themselves from getting this rare virus . The virus Chikungunya is spread from mosquitoes, when mosquitoes land on a person who has already been infected, they then spread the virus to other people through bites. They usually spread to people by Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes, they originated from Africa and are spreading quickly. Once you get bit by an infected mosquito your symptoms usually start 3-7 days after. The most common symptoms are fever, joint pain, rashes, and headaches. The easiest ways to prevent and protect yourself from Chikungunya is to get rid of standing waters, and keep windows and screens shut, wear long sleeves and use insect repellent. This helps because it causes mosquitos to avoid you, which then means you cant be bit. Which means you would not likely get the virus.
