In The Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare the motivations of the characters are disproportionately derived from their base emotions such as, anger, love, and sadness. The motivation for their actions in the play are quite clearly outlined through their actions, dialogue, and mistakes. The play attempts to display the idea that often time the motivation for one’s actions is fueled by various strong emotions that can skew one’s view of the world.

Duke Orsino of Illyria is one of the stars of the play, his objective within it is to win the affections of the beautiful Olivia. In the first scenes featuring lady Olivia the audience discovers the reason Olivia rejects him is because she knows that the duke does not really love her, rather it is infatuation. Nonetheless, the duke is desperate for her acceptance so when Cesario, a young handsome man arrives at his court he is overjoyed. Orsino bonds with Cesario and comes to believe that if he were to send this handsome young man instead of his usual emissaries to Olivia then finally she will accept his love. This unfortunately doesn’t go as planned and not only does she still reject him, the lady falls in love with Cesario. As time goes on the rejection wears at the duke and he begins to lose hope in life altogether. It seems that his perception of this misfortune has been magnified by his desperation. Meanwhile he continues to develop the relationship with Cesario not knowing what has happened. And so it developed, into something more. Orsino in his low spirits gradually realizes his feelings for Cesario, something he has never experienced with anyone and something that doesn’t make sense to him. In his confusion he spurs back into action in an attempt to avoid his feelings, to deny them. Afterall, Cesario is a man, the man that his precious lady now loves. When finally Orsino discovers this he is heartbroken that two of the people he loved most have both betrayed him. In a fit of rage he threatens to kill Cesario whom he admits he loves but decides vengeance is more important. The execution was stopped but surely this choice would have been one he would regret greatly nevertheless, in that moment he believed honestly that it was the right choice without caring about the consequences.
