Crochet Kitten Pattern

The finished kitten will be approximately 7.5 cm tall

Material:
- Crochet hook size 2 - 2.5mm (B or C)
- Yarn (in contrasting color) to mark the start and end of a round
- Sewing thread in similar color to your yarn
- 2 black pearls 4-5 mm (for eyes)
- Sewing needle
- Stuffing (and beanie pellets; optional)
- Pink embroidery thread
- Embroidery needle

The kitten is crocheted in spiral rounds. The start of each round can be marked with a contrasting piece of yarn, which is placed in between the last stitch of a round and the first stitch of the next round.

M = stitch(es)
Ch = chain stitch
Km = slip stitch
sc = single crochet
Tr = treble or triple crochet (Yarn over hook (twice), insert hook from front to back in the center of the fifth chain from the hook. Yarn over, draw the yarn through the chain (4 loops on hook).
Dtr = double treble (Yarn over hook 3 times, insert hook in stitch (a), yarn over, draw loop through (b), [yarn over, draw through 2 loops on hook] 4 times (c, d, e, f).

The kitten's body starts out by crocheting an oval shape for the base. This is crocheted in spiral rounds around the foundation chain.

To begin, ch 4 and join.
Row 1: 3 sc in the next to last ch, 1 sc in the middle ch, 3 sc in the beginning chain stitch. Do not turn the work, but add 1 sc in the middle ch of the foundation ch, on the lower side of the stitch. Now place your marker using contrasting yarn or thread.(3,1,3,1 =8st)

Row 2: 2 sc in first st, 3 sc in next 2 sc in 1 st, 1 sc, 2 sc in 1 st, 3 sc in 1 st, 2 sc in 1M, 1 sc (2,3,2,1,2,3,2,1=16)

Row 3: 2 sc, 2 sc in 1 st, 3 sc in 1 st, 2 sc in 1 st, 5 sc, 2 sc in 1 st, 3 sc in 1 st, 2 sc in 1 st, 3 sc (1,1,2,3,2,1,1,1,1,1,2,3,2,1,1,1)
(= 24M)

Rows 4-9: make 1 sc in each st; the sides should begin going up (like a little bag) instead of staying flat

Row 10: 6 sc, then stitch 7 + 8 + 9 together, and make 15 more stitches (M = 22 total)
Row 11: sc in each stitch
Row 12: 6 sc, skip next, after a further 10sc skip one, next 4sc (M = 20)
Row 13: sc in each stitch
Row 14: 6 sc, skip next, after another 9sc skip again, then 3 sc (M = 18)
Row 15: 1 sc in each stitch
Row 16: 6 sc, skip next, after another 8sc skip again, then 2 sc (M = 16)
Row 17: 6 sc, skip next, after a further 7sc skip, the next 1.

Now crochet two more sc on the last and then mark the start of a new round.

Making the Kitten's head:
Row 18: 2 sc, 2 sc in next 5 st; 2 sc, 2 sc in next 5 st (1,1,2,2,2,2,2,1,1,2,2,2,2,2)(M = 24)
Row 19-23: sc in each stitch for 5 rounds
Row 24: 4 sc, skip next st, 3 sc, skip next st, 9 sc, skip next, 3 sc, skip next, 1 sc
Row 25: 6 sc, 2 tr in 1st, 3 dtr in 1st, 2tr in 1st, 7 sc, 2 tr in 1 st, 3 dtr in 1 st, 2 tr in 1st, 1 sc
Join with sl (slip stitch).

Stuff the kittens body with cotton wool mixed with beanie pellets. Stuff the head with cotton wool only. Then sew up the head closed at the top. The tr crochet and db tr crochet form the ears. Embroider the nose with pink embroidery thread. To do this, embroider only a few stitches horizontally and then wrap this several times vertically. Attach the beads as eyes. Then pull the thread ends inside the cat, to hide the ends.

The kitten's tail:

5 sc in ring. Continue in spiral rounds until the tail is 8-9 cm long, or whatever length you desire. Sew the tail on. Curve the end of the tail if desired, and sew it in place with thread. Enjoy your kitten!
