Battle of Fort Sumter​
- April 12, 1861
- First battle of the Civil War
- Started the war
Battle of Galveston​
- The union wanted to blockade southern ports like Galveston
- Blockading Texas ports would break an important link in the Confederate supply chain
- The Union captured Galveston but the Confederacy recaptured it in January 1863 under the leadership of Texan General John Magruder​
Emancipation Proclamation​
- January 1, 1863
- Freed all slaves that were in the rebelling Southern states​
Battle of Sabine Pass​
- The Union Navy dominated the Gulf of Mexico but they wanted to gain a foothold in Texas
- The Union attacked the pass in an attempt to gain that foothold
- The Confederacy won the battle and thus stopped the Union's plan for invading Texas​
Red River Campaign​
- In March 1964 the Union was moving to attack the Confederates in Texas from the North along the Red River.
- The Confederates were desperate because it was obvious they were losing the war by this point.
- Despite terrible odds the Confederates were able to stop the Union attack​
End of the War​
- April 9 1865
- General Robert E. Lee of the Confederacy surrendered to General Ulysses S. Grant at the Appomattox Courthouse​
Battle at Palmito Ranch​
- May 13, 1865
- News had not reached troops in Texas.
- Despite having surrendered, the Confederate troops won this battle after the Civil War was over​
