Cryptology, atau lebih spesifiknya, Cryptography adalah ilmu yang mempelajari teknik-teknik matematika yang berhubungan dengan aspek keamanan informasi, seperti kerahasiaan data, keabsahan data, integritas data, serta autentikasi data.
Lebih singkatnya, ilmu dan seni yang menyembunyikan pesan dan data tertentu.
Ada 4 komponen dalam Cryptography, yaitu Plaintext (pesan yang dapat dibaca), Ciphertext (pesan acak yang tidak dapat dibaca), Key (kunci untuk melakukan teknik kriptografi) dan Algorithm atau metode untuk melakukan enkrispi dan dekripsi.
Enkripsi itu proses mengubah plaintext menjadi ciphertext. Dekripsi itu kebalikannya, proses untuk mengubah ciphertext menjadi plaintext atau singkatnya, menerjemahkan sebuah sandi.
Dari keempat komponen tadi, ada satu yang belum disebutkan dalam contoh, yaitu key. Key ini dipakai untuk sandi yang membutuhkan angka dan kata kunci.
