A Calming Draught was a potion used to calm a person down after they had suffered a shock, trauma, or emotional outburst. In 1996, Madam Pomfrey administered a Calming Draught to Hannah Abbott in her fifth year after she burst out crying in a Herbology lesson, claiming to be too stupid to take her exams.
When Muggle monster hunter Laura Thorn's Obliviated memories of witnessing a Troll resurfaced after smelling Percival Shacklehorn's dirty socks, Ministry witch Mathilda Grimblehawk had St Mungo's Healer Omar Abasi bring her a Calming Draught, passing it off for a brew. Despite being confined to the Leaky Cauldron during the investigation, Thorn later escaped to look for the Troll while Abasi was busy brewing another Calming Draught.
Ingredients:
• Water (16 fl. oz.)
• Fluxweed Oil (6 drops)
• Bloodroot Stems (3 stems, inner membrane and fluid)
The Steps of Making Calming Draught:
• Heat water in cauldron to warm
• Add 6 drops of Fluxweed Oil
• Split Bloodroot Stems lengthwise with a knife and scrape fluid and fibrous material from inside the stems. Crush into fine paste with mortar and pestle and add to the cauldron
• Stir slowly until a light steam rises from the cauldron, alternating clockwise and counterclockwise stirring
• Allow potion to cool before ingestion

Embarrassing Failure:
• Potion is destroyed, all ingredients and container are useless.

• 1 Potion is created.
Success:
• The duration lasts for 30 minutes.
Good Success:
• The duration lasts for 1 hour.

• The duration lasts for 3 hours.
Amazing Success:
• The duration lasts for 6 hours.
