CDS= Ett derivat som fungerar som en försäkring där man som ägare av en obligation kan få full garanti vid förlorat kapital. Urpsprungligen köpte en köpare av en obligation försäkringen, men nu handlas också CDS i spekulationssyfte. Alltså kan folk som inte äger obligationen eller skulden ändå försäkra den.

Investerare litade på att företag som kreditvärderingsföretagen hade givit höga kreditbetyg var god för sin garanti på CDS. Men de behövde de inte vara. De behövde inte sätta undan andelen kapital de hade garanterat för att förbereda sig för det värsta. En stor utbetalning.

Wall Street investerare (investmentbolag) lånar en massa på kredit från FED för inflytande (leverage) på marknaden när räntan endast ligger på 1%. "Leverage turns good deals in to great deals."
