Sejak awal mula terbentuknya, Bentuk bumi selalu berubah-ubah terutama pada lapisan permukaannya atau yang disebut litosfer. Litosfer bumi terbentuk dari batuan keras yang dapat bergeser saat terjadi getaran yang disebabkan oleh kekuatan dari dalam Bumi.
Menurut Wegener, awalnya seluruh daratan yang ada di Bumi berkumpul menjadi satu daratan yang sangat luas, biasa disebut pangea. Akibat kekuatan dari dalam Bumi atau yang biasa dikenal dengan gempa tektonik, daratan luas tersebut mulai terpisah menjadi bagian-bagian kecil dan terhanyut ke tempat yang berbeda-beda.
Pecahan-pecahan dari daratan tersebut ada yang bergabung dan ada yang terus bergerak perlahan-lahan hingga akhirnya frekuensi gempa mulai berkurang dan terbentuklah benua-benua yang saat ini jumlahnya ada 7 buah, yaitu Benua Asia, Australia, Eropa, Afrika, Amerika Utara, Amerika Selatan, dan Antartika
