Let's say you want to talk about an activity that is ongoing or happens regularly, such as a daily work out, a diet, or a habit, but the activity is not immediately happening. In this case, you can use "zài," the Chinese word for 'at.' So, the sentence “Wǒ zài chī yào" can mean ‘I’m currently taking medicine’ without saying that it’s happening at that second.
This construction is used while doing other things as well, like playing on a school team, studying a language or working. When you use the ‘at,’ or “zài,” it doesn’t mean you are doing it right that minute, but are in the general state of doing something.
Wǒ zài xuéxí Zhōngwén = I’m currently studying Chinese.
Wǒ zài lánqǐu duì wánr = I’m playing on the basketball team.
Wǒ zài gōngzuò = I have a job / I’m working.
If you want to reflect more immediacy with your action, you can do that in two ways. First of all, you can say “zhèng zài,” meaning right now.
Wǒ zhèng zài chī fàn = I’m eating right now.
Wǒ zhèng zài xué Zhōngwén = I’m studying Chinese right now.
Another way is to use “zhōng” after the verb. This is used more to say, ‘I’m in the middle of something,’ and is used when the action takes up more time.
Wǒ zài shàngkè zhōng = I’m in the middle of class.
Wǒ zài xué xí zhōng = I’m in the middle of study.
