Marketing is all about Acceptability, Affordability, Accessibility and Awareness, the values that matter most to customers. It helps companies create value for customers by identifying exactly what they want and need, as well as by uncovering new wants and needs.
For example, none of us knew we "needed" an iPad until Apple created it. It not only ensuring that customers are aware of the product, but also ensuring that the product is affordable, accessible and acceptable to them.
I don't accept to the fact "marketing is all about creatively making people buy things that they do not really need "

How many things do you buy as necessity which are also advertised on TV? You may or may not have seen the ad.
Do you buy things like TV, toothpaste, soap, food, kids’ things and so many other things just because they have be n marketed to you?
On the other hand, if there's a new car, new shoes, new mobile, new insurance plan, in market, how else will you get to know, other than advertising?
Aim of marketing is not just to sell things that are not necessary. Even something as basic as salt is advertised.

While I agree that sometimes you end up impulsively buying things for yourself of for your kids that are not necessary, but that's our loose self control. :)

It's a world of business: everyone works for some company, they get salary and increments if the company can sell more and more and more. If there's a new competitor, you gotta sell all the more. How do you sell more? - by marketing.

Besides, it's not just selling, you have ads for awareness as well. You won't even explore a new/ better/ improved product unless they tell you about its features.

How a car has better technology, a mobile has longer battery, a housing project has new payment plan, soap is herbal, a watch is better water proof, a restaurant has new ambience will not be known to consumers if they don't advertise and keep sitting in a dark corner waiting for customers to come.
