10 Apps That Can Help You Control Your Best Robot Vacuums
Best Robot Vacuums and Mop Combos

The best method to keep your home clean is with a robot vacuum. It will remove dust, pet hair, and other surface debris before it becomes a larger problem.

Some robots are able to sync with smart assistants like Alexa or Google Assistant to provide a hands-free environment. Find models that recharge and pick up where they left off.

1. iRobot S8

This smart robot mop and vacuum is a great choice for many households. It has a great navigation system with GPS and laser sensors. It also comes with numerous features and controls accessible via the app. It also has a handy feature that lets you create cleaning zones in areas that require more attention, and also to create Keep Out zones in areas where you do not want it to go. As with all Roomba devices, it receives new software updates that make it even better over time.

It's expensive but is also one of the most sophisticated robot vacuums ZDNet has ever tested. It has a powerful battery that can sweep an entire home in less than two hours. It also switches between vacuuming and mopping at the touch of the button. And, unlike other self-emptying robots that require you to empty the dust bin after each run, it automatically emptys itself into a larger waste container above its charging dock.

It also has many other options, like intelligent obstacle avoidance which uses cameras and processor-powered smarts in order to detect obstacles. It's not often damaged or trapped during a cleaning process and is the best at avoiding power cables as well as other objects in my tests. However, it isn't as effective in detecting pet waste and other hazards.

2. Eufy RoboVac X8 Hybrid

While Anker-owned Eufy has made an impact in the field of low-cost robot vacuums, it's not yet an all-in-one model that could also mop. The X8 Hybrid is a new model that comes with a variety of features that are advanced and can compete with much more expensive models.

Laser navigation is the most important feature of this machine. The X8 uses a laser mapping system that is more precise than previous Eufy devices. It takes less time to create a comprehensive map of your home. It also has the ability to store multiple maps. This is perfect for homes with multiple floors.

The X8 is a great vacuum cleaner for floors that are clean. It can easily sling debris under the side brushes and into the 400ml dustbin. Its tyres are also very adept at securing corners and edges even though they are circular. It's not a fantastic cat litter eater, however as our tests show it only removes about 90 percent of the fur off hard floors.

There's a basic mopping option that utilizes the same water tank as the vacuuming one. While this is a good option for spills that are not too large however, you aren't able to limit the amount of water it uses which can limit its effectiveness when dealing with more serious staining. It does, however, do an admirable job of picking up pet hair, with a better pickup rate than the Roborock S7.

3. Miele RX2

Miele's RX2 robotic vacuum is known for its quiet, effective appliances. It is a stunning design, a great navigation system and a powerful cleaning power. It has some oddities in its operation that keep it from being named the best smart robot vacuum.

The RX2 is equipped with a dual-sensor mapping technology which uses LIDAR to map an area, and a pair 3D scanning cameras to detect and avoiding obstacles (such as furniture legs or pet waste). Once the room is mapped the app allows you to assign virtual no-go areas and preferred areas that the robot will clean automatically. You can also start a manual clean or manually change the cleaning mode, view a live feed from the onboard cameras, and more from the main screen.

The RX2 is equipped with excellent sensors that can identify furniture and other obstructions in a flash. top robot vacuum and sweeping abilities are exceptional, taking away surface debris from carpets with medium pile as well as embedded dust on bare floors. However, it's not exactly the most efficient robot available. It's not the best climber, and it has problems with metal threshold transition strips.

Some people buy a robot vacuum for the ease of setting up a schedule using an app and not thinking about it for weeks at one time. But it's important that a robot is able to get the job done and that's the reason our ZDNet staff looked over and tested a number of the most well-known models to help you select the best one for your home.

4. Shark ION

This budget robovac is a robot that is similar to other, but it has several more features and is more efficient. Its smart mapping system creates 3D and 2D maps of your home and uses them to navigate and avoid obstacles. It's also able to detect common obstacles like furniture legs and power cords in real time. This combination of sensors, along with a bump sensor, and an infrared drop sensor that keeps it away from the stairs, makes it one of the most agile vacuums we've tried.

It was able to walk over thick shag carpets and was not stuck (unlike the RoboVac 11s, or Roomba 690-). Its navigation skills were impressive as well; its composite score in carpet and bare floors beat out the competition. It was able to pick up 98.5 percent of surface litter and embedded pet hair from our laboratory test samples.

The controls are simpler than the competition; there's a round cleaning button on the top and you can start it from the app or by voice command with Alexa or Google Assistant. You can also schedule daily or weekly cleanings, set up no-go zones, and look up its history of cleaning. Covered in stylish dark gray plastics, Ion feels sturdy and looks attractive in your home. Its rear dustbin is accessible for emptying, and removing the filters is also simple.

5. Eufy 11S

If you're looking for a basic, no-frills robot vacuum at a reasonable cost, the Eufy 11S could be a good choice. This model lacks some smart features such as Alexa integration and digital mapping that are found in more expensive models. However, if you don't require these features, you can save money.

This robot is simple to use and set up. It doesn't require a smartphone app or Wi-Fi pairing, however it does come with the ability to control the remote with a remote that lets you choose between various modes and adjust the suction level. You can also manually send the robotvac on a cleaning schedule.

In our tests during our tests, the 11S was very effective at removing dirt and pet hair from hard floors and in low-pile carpets. Its slim profile allowed it to pass under furniture that is low-hanging and other items that some larger robots are unable to reach. It was also able to easily get over thresholds for doors and transition between floors and another.

Like other robots, the 11S can suck up some objects such as cords, drawstrings for hoodies, and cat toys. The manufacturer says that you can stop this by keeping such objects off the floor and by using an organizer for cords if you can. It also recommends that you clean the dustbin, replace the filters and wash or change the brushes as required.

iRobot Roomba 990

The Roomba 980 is iRobot's most popular robot vacuum. It's expensive but it's the best robot vacuum you can purchase. Its self-navigation feature and environmental mapping is a marvel to behold. It also comes with more advanced automation features than its competitors, including the ability to set virtual boundary markers with its mobile app. It's a dependable robot vacuum, even if its app is a bit sluggish and the 980's wheels spin out when rolling over cables.

One thing we really like about the 980 is the fact that it utilizes its iAdapt 2.0 navigation sensors and its visual simultaneous localisation and mapping technology (or vSLAM) to remember the floor plan of your home. It uses this information to create a consistent, efficient cleaning path through each cycle. The result is cleaner floors and a more efficient robot vacuum than many high-end robotics.

Other features of the 980 include two multi-surface rubber brushes which grab dirt from hard floors and carpet as well as the spinning brush that sweeps debris into the robotic vacuum's bin. Its floor tracking sensors aid it navigate around furniture and along edges, and Cliff Detect keeps the Roomba from falling down stairs. It will also return to the base station for simple recharging in between sessions. Although the 980's battery life and bin size aren't quite as impressive as other robot vacuums, it's a solid and reliable machine that can keep your floors spotless for hours at a time.
