Crypto expert @1999_eth suggested that OKX might have implemented a defective script, causing the unusual increase in fees. The incident has had a major effect on the Bitcoin system, with over 330,000 transactions left unprocessed as of the report. Bitcoin's network backlog, a regular event in times of high transaction volumes or large market activities, intensified the issue.

Examples of network congestion are not uncommon in Bitcoin. The most significant past example was in that year, when Bitcoin's climb to $20,000 led to a mempool accumulation of about 180,000 unconfirmed transfers, resulting in delays lasting multiple days.
