Which Lightweight Double Pushchair Should You Buy?
A compact double pushchair makes it simple to get around, particularly when you have children of different ages. They are easy to fold, steer and transport up and down the stairs.
This City Mini GT2 offers side-by-side seats with plenty of legroom and reclining that can be adjusted. It also has massive UPF 50+ canopy with windows that peek out. It also has a clever frame that can be expanded to accommodate a second car seat and compatible car seat(s).
Side-by-Side
The majority of the light double pushchairs we tried were side-by-side models. These are the best for children who can sit without assistance, as they aren't as likely to have car seat compatibility. That said there are some exceptions. Thule Urban Glide 2 Double and Baby Trend Sit 'N Stand Double are both excellent options that offer recline that can be adjusted in both seats, a huge canopy and padded 5-point harnesses. They are also simple to maneuver despite their bigger footprint. They are perfect for parents who fret about fitting through doors.
The Cybex Duet is a little different because its clever frame extends its width to create a second seat, which makes it lighter than other pushchairs with side-by-side seating available. It is able to pass through doors of standard size and is easy to maneuver in public transport. It also doubles as an jogger which is perfect if you plan to use it in conjunction with an infant car seat or baby carrier.
The UPPAbaby Vista v2 double is another fantastic side-by-side double that is lightweight. It provides an even greater degree of customization due to a modular frame. Its clever design lets you to convert it into a single or double buggy by adding two carrycots or child car seats. It can even accommodate twins. It's a great option for families with growing children and the UPPAbaby is among the lightest and most stylish umbrella strollers around.
If you prefer a more compact lightweight double, try the egg2 which folds to the size of a compact suitcase. It can be used as a single or a double by adding 2 carrycots or infant car seats and our home testers were awed by how simple and sleek it was to use even when loaded with kids.
Side-by-side pushchairs that are lightweight aren't foolproof, though -when your children are the same age or at the same stage, they might still argue over who gets to ride in which seat. If they're at different heights, then a tandem style may be ideal for them as it lets them face each other.
Tandem
While side-by-side models may be better suited for siblings with similar ages, tandem lightweight double pushchairs offer their own perks. Some can accommodate carseats that are larger, and others come with reversible seats. Some even come with an additional carrycot or reversible seat in the middle. They are generally more spacious and easier to get in and out of however their baskets are usually smaller than the ones on single buggies. They often have larger canopy with windows that peek out and cushioned leg cushions.
The iCandy Peach tandem is another good example of a lightweight tandem that provides an excellent value. Its fabric feels a bit less expensive than our other top-rated tandems, but it looks and feels great and is very user-friendly. One of the most striking things about it is its single-handed fold. While it will require some practice, Kirstie in our Lab said it's "genius". It can't be folded with the carrycot attached however the mechanism for attaching and removing it is simple and fast.
Tandem pushchairs that are lightweight generally make more precise turns than side-by-side models however they are more difficult to drive over uneven surfaces and curbs. They can also be slower to accelerate and more heavy to move. This can put strain on your back.
A convertible double buggy is an additional alternative. It is initially a single however, you can add adapters to convert it into a double. These can include the option of a second seat or carrycot in front or children can sit side-by-side. Some may have the option of including a buggyboard that assists an older child to keep pace with younger siblings or brothers.
The Uppababy Vista V2 is a great example of a convertible, as it can also convert into a twin pram through the purchase of additional cocoons (PS59 each) which create a lay-flat space for newborns. They can be placed side by side or attached to one another, and you can use them with the infant car seat that comes with the pushchair (as as long as you select a compatible one). Since they are made of high-quality materials, these kinds of buggies that are dual-use can be used for a long time without showing much wear, which means they have a an excellent potential for resale.
Single-to-Double
Designed for outdoor-loving families who want to upgrade from a single stroller, this lightweight double buggy can be converted into a jogger thanks to an innovative kit that includes air-filled tyres, as well as all-wheel suspension. It's also a good option for twins or children from different age groups and, as triple tandem, it can take on rough terrain. It's a great choice for parents who want a sleek design as sleek as a single and is available in a variety of colors.
We loved the way this iCandy model folds up using a single-hand mechanism that's extremely easy to master. It's heavier than other single-to double pushchairs, but home tester Karolina says it's very maneuverable even with two toddlers and carrying a carrycot.
The seat can be used as a parent-facing and you can purchase additional accessories for this stroller like the Roma Gemini carrycots (PS100 each) which are great for newborns. The seats are comfortable for toddlers with good headrests and lumbar support. There are a variety of options for reclined seats with the front seat adjustable in different positions and the back seat having a reclining option.
This kind of buggy has the greatest disadvantage of being wider than the side-by-side doubles. This makes it difficult to maneuver through doorways, and it can be difficult to move up and down kerbs. However the suspension and wheels on these models generally perform well in dealing with pavements and the fact that they're generally much lighter than some of the side-bysides means that you still have plenty of storage space. It's important to remember that these types of strollers aren't as efficient in getting through narrow aisles in supermarkets and aren't able to cope with a lot of shopping. Although it's much easier to turn the stroller on a narrow curved path, this can still be a challenge. Some are also more easy to turn than others, such as the Thule Urban Glide 2 Double and the Baby Trend Sit N' Stand Double, for example.
Convertible
Convertible double pushchairs are great because they are able to be adapted to the changing needs of families. They typically start as single buggies, and have adapters that allow you to add a second seat, carrycot or (in some cases) the car seat to the frame. Some of them can be converted back to a single as your child gets older and starts to walk more or prefers to ride on buggy boards.
One of the most lightweight double strollers on our list, this sleek tri-fold model can hold children up to 40 lbs each and features a handy basket in between the seats for storage. The large canopy with a peekaboo window, multi-position reclining chairs and a front and back suspensions for smoother and more comfortable riding on rough terrain were praised by home testers. It also comes with a handy cup holder for the parent, and a large accessible, easily accessible basket. However, they noticed that the seats' backs have small pockets that aren't big enough to hold more than a cell phone and keys.
This light, high-end side-byside is available in more than 20 models. It also includes a second chair and carrycot. Its impressive features include a high-profile handlebar for easier steering and a rear and front suspension to smooth rough terrain; a self-standing compact fold that has straps that make it easy to schlep and seven-inch swing lock front wheels and 10-inch rear wheels with suspension for a smoother ride. The only drawback is that you'll need to purchase a separate baby carriage or car seat.
This versatile tandem is a popular choice from our home testers due to its maneuverability and large shopping basket, which is accessible with both seats facing the parent. Its lightweight weight (about the same as single pushchairs) makes it easy to move. Many have praised the clever way it connects the second seat or riding board at the back. Parents also admired that it accommodates infant carriers and car seats from various brands. This includes some that are not typically compatible with other double buggies.
